How to Make a Diaper Baby

October 22, 2009 at 7:00 AM by Cafe MicheleZ - Comments (13)

diaper babyI'm a little clueless when it comes to baby shower traditions. The only tradition I've seen is the making of the hat with the bows and ribbons from the gifts.

I've only recently learned what a diaper cake was and I just was clued in to the diaper baby. And wow -- how much do I love these ideas! They are not only adorable, but they are filled with items you really need!

My friend Priscilla, aka Peajewel, made me an incredible diaper cake and twin diaper babies. These gifts are so darn cool I cannot even explain what it means to me that she, along with her mom and sister, put these together for me.

In case you don't know, a diaper baby is made of cloth diapers and they are rolled up and stuffed into an outfit -- in this case footed PJs. If you don't use cloth diapers, these can be made with regular diapers or the cloths can be used as burp cloths or for baby's bath.

For one diaper baby, here is what you will need:

  • About 30 diapers
  • Rubber bands or diaper pins
  • Footed PJs or outfit of your choice
  • A blanket to swaddle baby
  • Hat
  • Patience to put together :)

How to:

Diapers are rolled into cylinder shapes and either pinned or wrapped in rubber band. Stuff into clothing to fill out body. For head, use one cloth over cylindrical cloths to form round shape and pin or band into place. Draw on a cute baby face if you'd like! Add baby hat and swaddle in blanket and you have your diaper baby!

Have you ever made a diaper baby before? What about a diaper cake?

Lokis...

I never made a diaper baby or diaper cake...I'm not that patient.  What I did do when my friend Melissa had a baby shower was I took a pack and a half or so of newborn sized diapers that I had sitting around, since my son had outgrown them rather quickly, and made a 'diaper bag'.  Basically, I took the open pack and lightly taped the diapers to the outside of a gift bag, then put the unopened pack of diapers in the bag, along with some other little things that I had gotten her. :D  It was cute.

Michele, I don't know if you have "played" with the babies at all yet but if you take the outfits off, they should stay together.  This type is actually rolled and put together and a diaper is place on the baby as if it were an actual baby.  I don't promise they will stay together but they should.  hee hee  I am so glad you like them and if anyone attempts it with cloth and has any questions at all, feel free to PM me, I will do what I can to help.  I can even try to make another one and take pics along the way to help out.

Cafe...

I haven't played with them yet because my mom is coming over on Saturday and I need her to see them in person. I love them so much! Everything on them is so needed and useful -- just like the diaper cake. Peajewel is the best!
