Baby Name Change...At the Last Minute

baby girl

My beautiful niece Tennessee

When my sister, Jen, was pregnant with her first baby, she loved the name Sophia. They found out the baby was a girl and Sophia became the name we all cooed into her belly.

For her baby shower, I made cupcakes in ice cream cones and spelled out the name Sophia -- a letter on six cupcakes all in a row.

We all couldn't wait until Sophia was born. But Sophia turned into Tennessee.

Sometime during the third trimester, my sister decided Sophia was not the name of the baby. She just felt the little girl growing inside her and the name was a match.

She and her husband had talked about the name Tennessee, but if it was a boy. It was brought up again and they both fell in love with it for their little girl.

The name change was a little jolting for the family. Some of the more traditional thinkers were really unsure of the name. Some opinions were voiced...mostly people would ask what happened to the beautiful name Sophia?

I'm sure my sister got tired of explaining, but anyone who knows Tennessee knows she was meant to be Tennessee. Sophia, even though a great name, wouldn't have been the right name for her.

My husband and I have names we really love for our twins...but there's a little part of me being cautious in case we have a name change at the last minute, too.

Did you have a name picked out for your baby, then went with a different name?

I have been hesitant about picking out a final name for my baby. I think it's great to have a general idea of what I would LIKE to name the baby, but until I actually see and know the baby...saying 'This is going to be their name' wasnt the route for me.

My advice- make a list with your favorite at the top. When you see the babies you'll say this is it! And you may be surprised with your choice, or you might not!

I wanted Aurora for YEARS... since I was pregnant with Rowan.  Last trimester, I flipped out and went through ALL my name books again, make new lists, and everything.  But she's still Aurora. :)

I knew Lydia was going to be Lydia Grace from the time I was about 10 years old. I always wanted a girl to name that, and when I got her, I knew it was perfect!

I knew from the time I found it my first was a boy that he would be Nicholas, and go by Nico. It's a name/nickname combo I had picked out when I was a little girl, and there was no changing my mind.

When I found out I was having a second boy, I had no idea what to name him. Hubby and I went back and forth for the entire pregnancy. When he was born and they asked what name to put on the birth certificate, I looked at my husband and said, "Are we still going with Lucas?" He is totally a Lucas, but I hate the nicknames that go along with it, so he will always be Lucas, never Luke, Lue and especially Luey.

I was dead set on naming our little princess Caelie.  Instead, Daddy convinced me that Anastasia would be more suiting, and it is. She really does think she's a princess >__>

My son Christopher was Justin until the day he was born! When I saw him he just looked so much like my husband I had to name him Christopher Jr. It fits him so well. He's like Dh's little mini me.

We had picked the name Chloey before we found out the gender. We knew that would be her name, no question about it if we had a girl. Then we found out the gender. As soon as we found out we were having a girl I started to have second thoughts about the name. I still liked the name but I just didn't feel it was the right name this time. We ended up falling in love with the name Sophia and that's what we finally decided on. Can't wait to meet her in a few weeks!
