Kids With Clothes Hang-Ups

My 5-year-old son would be naked all the time if I let him. He's never cared about clothes and wears anything I give him. My 4-year-old daughter, however, is unreasonably obsessed with her clothes. She insists on picking out every outfit, including her socks and undies. I was such a tomboy at her age and just can't relate to this at all.

Here are her rules:

1. All items must be pink (that includes shoes and coats) or colors in the same family, which means ...

2. Red is okay, but orange and some purples are a no-go--"Those are boy colors, Mommy!")

3. Those pink articles preferably have some type of flashy design, pattern or sparkles, else they are too boring for my girl.

4. Stripes are out (boys) and polka-dots are okay, as long as they are BIG garish-looking dots.

Of course, she insists on picking out her own outfits each day -- you would die if you saw some of the shirt/pant combos she's come up with. But then, if you have a toddler girl, you've probably seen plenty of your own fashion disasters. I just had to laugh when I read that zachysmommy04 is having her own but slightly different clothing issues with her 4-year-old boy.

Here are his hangups:

1. He will only wear denim pants with a button and pockets and only a few shirts. He once wore the same clothes for three weeks. I have to wait till he gets a bath to steal them away and wash them.

2. The only time he will wear anything different is his school uniform. But even then it has to be a blue short-sleeved shirt and button pants.

3. Even when we both pick out the clothes the night before, he changes his mind in the morning.

Is your toddler a fussy fashionista? And, on a mildly related note ...

My four (5 in a month) year old won't wear anything but dresses and dress shoes. She won't even go for the shirt/skirt combo and don't even mention boots or tennis shoes no matter how many inches of snow are on the ground.

Skinc...
Enjoy the fact that your daughter wears dresses. That will soon end and she won't ever want to wear one. Take lots of pictures now because you just may never see another dress on her unless it's a holiday or her prom. Yikes!

My girls went through these stages when they were younger.  At one point, my youngest daughter would only wear dresses, no matter how cold it was.  Now (at age 12) you couldn't pay her to wear a dress.  They had color issues, texture issues, yada yada yada.  And I promise, it doesn't get better as they get older.

Luckily my boys still wear whatever I tell them too... the only thing my 2.5 year old is piky about is his pj's... he likes to pick those out which usually narrows it down to either Thomas the Train, tractors, or dinosaurs. .... Wait... While I am typing this he is now complaining that he doesn't like is pants... "They are too baggy! I want them off!"... which I guess they are, he's in beween sizes in pants right now.

Some of my son's outfits are funny. He could be wearing his "girly" cowboy boots (they were given to him by a friend of my daughter's), shorts, and a t-shirt. He doesn't care what he dresses like. He has his own style. My daughter on the other hand, 8, is a girly girl. All she wears is dresses and skirts.

My daughter has chosen her clothes since she was 19 months old. She has to match and wants to pick everything all by herself. I just let her do it the night before and luckily she pretty good at matching. I let her have control in this area and she has great taste. She also takes her father shopping and has bought some really nice things for me (from head to toe). It is healthy for children to have some control in their lives. When people see children they can tell when they have dressed themselves or perhaps their father has dressed them. Hee Hee!

I wish my 2-1/2 yr old girl would just wear clothes! LOL   She loves to run around the house in her big girl undies and nothing else but a bow in her hair :)
