Are Your Kids Still Eating Peanut Butter?

February 15, 2009 at 8:44 AM by Cafe Cynthia - Comments (57)

It's me, the "bad mommy," again.

Of course I've read the news about salmonella in peanut butter -- how could anyone not! And they recently expanded the list of peanut butter products on the potentially contaminated list.

But I still haven't tossed the jars or the peanut butter filled pretzels in my house yet. And if my son asks me to make him a PBJ for lunch today, I can't guarantee that I'll refuse.

We tend to buy the organic, natural peanut butter, so I think that's safe.

I'm not sure if I'm my blase attitude toward this national health threat is because the thought of checking websites to see if our particular brand of peanut butter makes the tainted list overwhelms me to the point of disinterest, or if I'm desensitized to anything the media tells me these days -- legit or not.

So please don't bash me. But tell me -- do you feel the same or the opposite? Are you paranoid about peanut butter?

If we had the stuff that's the problem- certain crackers, ice creams, etc-- I'd throw them out (possibly even if they weren't on the "definitely bad" list. As it is, our kids are only eating brand name peanut butter from a jar, which we know was not supplied from the problem manufacturer. So we're good.

What else could I send him for lunch anyway? Safe when not cold, lots of protein...

Jessy...

My toddler would starve to death without peanut butter!  lol.  Anyway, we're almost through an entire jar and no issues so obviously ours isn't tainted.  I don't buy most of the things on the recall list (what I've heard of it anyway) as I make most of my own treats and such so I'm not concerned.

All we have is the big jar of pb anyway and I am pretty sure I heard that they weren't the problem. We're good.

My son LOVES peanut butter don't think I could completely take it away.  I have checked everything that we have and we only have peanut butter in our hose from "safe" companies.  I don't think I really buy anything that was on the recall list anyway!

A jar of PB lasts us about half a year, so the jar DS is eating from is about 4 months old or older.  I'm pretty sure it's not contaminated.  If I did have doubts, I'd check it, but I'm 99% sure we're in the clear.  DS is the only one who eats PB around here.

it's my understanding that jars of peanut butter were not tainted as the company that sold the contaminated peanuts only sells to commercial vendors. this means the tainted products would be items you purchase that contain peanut butter--crackers, bars, etc.

Mrs.S...

The PB that we have is from Christmas. (It was a big jar) Its almost gone and I have to say I don't think I will be buying anymore for a while. I threw out the un-opened jar we had just to be safe. I think its sad we have to worry about what we feed our Children! Ahhh!

Tessa...

We have a peanut allergy in our house anyway, so we don't get it.  But I do think its funny how many people think they couldn't live without peanut butter.  Don't get me wrong, I love peanut butter, but there are other thing that kids will eat!
