In the first official death reported in the U.S., a 23-month old toddler from Texas has died from the swine flu.
"This is definitely SCARY!," says Mami9207 in Advice for Moms this morning. "I have a 21 month old who loves the outdoors, but I'm taking precautions and staying home. He's sick, but has been since before the flu came out. I was paranoid about it, but the doctor says he's fine. Ladies, keep your children safe!"
According to the Associated Press, the toddler arrived in Texas from Mexico on April 4 and developed flu symptoms four days later.
The Texas Department of State Health Services said Wednesday the Mexico City boy had underlying health problems when he traveled to Brownsville, Texas to visit relatives. He was admitted to a Houston hospital a few days after developing a fever and other flu symptoms and died on Monday night.
CafeMoms are worried about the swine flu, but aren't entirely sure what to do. The CDC says it definitely expects more deaths from the flu, and numerous schools have closed as a precaution.
I've been scouring the web for advice and here's a few links that provide good information:

For now, the general advice is to treat this illness like any other flu -- make your toddlers wash their hands constantly (especially if they've been out in public), tell them to cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze, keep them home if they're sick, and get them to the doctor if symptoms worsen or persist.
++What precautions are you taking to protect your children from the swine flu? Are you following your typical hygiene or have you ramped it up lately?
It is very scary ...... I freak out if she gets anyway and knowing that if she gets sick it could be the swine flu freaks me out even more. My mom is a teacher and is always around sick kids ........... I just hope that since we see my mom alot that we won't get sick .
At this point, I would not take your kids to the doctor if it appears to be a cold. The flu comes on fast and has a high fever. If your kid has the sniffles and you take them to the dr, you may catch something much worse while there.
That being said, if symptoms and fever come on fast go to the dr that day. Anti virals only work if taken within 48 hours of the first symptoms.
According to CNN HLN, the boy was FROM Mexico and just in the US for medical care. I haven't been stressing too much about it. My daughter has a nasty cough, and I had strep a week ago, so I'm a little concerned that I gave it to her. But Swine Flu was definitely not my first conclusion.
I took my 2 yr old daughter to the pediatrician yesterday and she has a double ear infection. I suspected that that's what it was. But the Swine flu scare definitely is a scary deal.
I was very scared on Sunday night when my 2 yr old daughter developed a high fever, cough, and complained about a headache. With the swine flu going on i didnt wait called her Dr. right away and took her in. I was suprised to see many people at the Drs office with flu like symptoms pretty scary. They had us in a diffrent waiting room with masks. They did a strep throat test, check her ears for infection and just gave me medicine to keep her fever down and just let her rest. My daughter was ok by Monday night and Tuesday went back to daycare. I called threwout the day and they said she was doing great like she wasnt even sick. This morning Wednesday I just came back from Dr. right now because she had a bloody nose and still fever. The Dr. says she'll be ok. But it is sooo scary to know that this flu is going around and its seems to be very serious. Take your kids to Dr. even if its a minor thing. My Dr. said i did a good thing by not waiting and just bringing her in. You never know and its best to get the kids checked.
I'm not doing anything different. My kids have never had the flu of any kind. They rarely get sick. They all had colds a few weeks ago which I caught and I was really sick for like 2 weeks (coughs, aches, migraines, fever off and on, sore throat, stuffy nose, etc) but they were better in like 3 days. They ended up with stuffy noses and coughs. Which is how it always goes. they give it to me and I get really sick and they are better in days.
