Last month my husband and I faced down a decision that a mom in Toddler Moms has been wrangling with: Do you join the town pool or save money and buy a kiddie pool?
All kinds of questions figure in: Do you yourself want to swim or do you just want to occupy your toddler? Can they even swim yet? Will there be other kids to play with? Are you just going to be chasing them around to keep them out of trouble anyway? Is your toddler just happy getting wet and splashing around a little bit?
hannahsmommy321's town charges $90 for a family pass (ours is four times that), so she had a much tougher decision that we did. Plus, she's in Wisconsin, not as hot as other parts of the country.
Other moms were overwhelmingly in favor of the kiddie pool.
"I'd take the $90 bucks and buy a good size kid pool and some cool pool toys, maybe even a water slide," says RVTMommy. "The pool pass is a waste of money if the weather isn't always nice in the summer."
"If you think that you would get enough use out of it from now until August 15th, then I'd go for it," says butterflyblu. "$90 for a family is really cheap. We had a membership to a pool when I was growing up and it was like $400 for the summer. The pool had 2 diving boards and 1 water slide, ping pong tables, a sand volleyball court, a basketball court, and swim lessons for members. If I had older children, I might consider the pool membership."
That's why our town pool costs so much. It's like a mini water park, really. Great for older kids, but limiting for toddlers. We'll probably try to swing it next summer, though, when my son will be 7. hannahsmommy321 also decided on the kiddie pool, and her toddler daughter is lovin' it!
How much does your town charge for a family pass to the pool? Is it worth it, or should Toddler Moms just stick with the kiddie pool as long as possible?

I paid 50 buck for our family pool pass...we love it and go alll the time! It's something we really look forward to every year.
I have no idea what the price is, and am not even going to check. As soon as we move we are getting a kiddie pool.
WELL WE PAID TEN DOLLARS FOR OUR PASS AND WE GET IN TO OTHER POOLS FOUR FREE SO THAT IS SO COOL SO WE HAVE A LOT OF FUN
i started my daughter in swim classes at the Y, its inside, always good weather, and she gets lots of excercise. a 3 hour nap after guarunteeeeeed! and she gets to socialize with other kids, it works perfect.
I THINK THAT A POOL PASS IS BETTER, CAUSE THE WHOLE FAMILY GETS 2 GET IN A POOL ANY TIME U WANT 2. IT WILL BE WORTH IT 2 GET A PASS.![]()
I think its a good idea if you will get your money worth out of it. Some places it is just too much. If we go on post it cost me 12 dollars everytime we go and that can get costly to go everyday. To do a summer family pass its like 30 dollars a person for a month.
Last year we brought my daughter a kiddie pool and my next door neighbor gave us a small family size pool. It was great. We haven't used it yet this year but I think we will blow them up today. I live in South Florida and it's very very hot.

We live on a military base, so we have access to an indoor pool for $3 for me, it's free for our three year old and my husband. I miss our old base in SC, we had an outdoor pool that was only $2, it had a water slide and a kiddie pool with a water mushroom. If we lived somewhere warmer than Washington, I would shell out the $90 for a membership. We grew up going to a public pool and it was one of the best parts about summer. I think it was closer to $400. I have enough friends with pools that we won't need to get a membership when we move back to Michigan.
