I Don't Wanna Eat the Crust! (A Quick Tip for Moms)

September 3, 2009 at 11:43 AM by Cafe Suzanne - Comments (6)

bread crust and fussy toddlerMy daughter eats everything—all kinds of fish, vegetables, spicy foods, things that a lot of other kids will never even touch. My husband and I brag about her love affair with food all the time, but a friend who's a chef knocked us off our high horses. He said his kid was that way too, but by the time she was three she refused all food but macaroni and cheese and chicken fingers. I've been holding my breath, and lately it seems like our "good eater" is starting to get a little fussy about food.

Take bread crust for instance. She's become a kid who won't eat it. I don't want to throw it away—it seems like such a waste. That's why I love this tip Kate of Careermama shared with ParentHacks.

"If you are constantly cutting the crust off of your child's sandwiches, don't throw it away. Save it in the freezer in a zip top baggy. In a week or two, you will have enough to put into the food processor with some herbs for yummy homemade bread crumbs."

Love it!

What creative things do you do with your kid's bread crust or other leftovers?

My kids eat their crusts.  If they don't then they don't get their snack with lunch.  I've only ever had a problem with my oldest and her crusts and that's all because her best friend doesn't eat hers.  She's 10 and her mom still cuts the crusts off her sandwich.  After spending a weekend there she came home saying she wouldn't eat her crusts anymore which really ticked me off because she never had a problem with it before.

I finally got her back to eating her crusts but it took awhile and the loss of a lot of snacks for her.  My kids also eat all veggies, fish, spicy foods, and pretty much anything else I put in front of them.

Yeah..my kid gets told tough crap on eating the crust, LOL.  When he's old enough to figure out how to make it himself without the crust then he can have at it, until then, tough poo for him.

WvPho...

My 3y/o sometimes doesn't eat the crust. If she doesn't I cut them up in cubes, and once you have enough you can toast them to make croutons or stuffing.

Save the heals of the bread too. I always used to throw them away. but they make great breadcrumbs too. : )

momlo...

My son was a great eater until he got to be about 2 1/2 years old.  He's not BAD now (at 3 yrs old) but he's not as easy as he used to be.  One of the weird quirks he taught himself is to not eat his crust.  I just make the sandwich all the way to the edge (I'm kinda OCD about everything spread or distributed evenly anyways) and I eat his crust.

I like the bread crumb idea but do they need to be dried out before cooking with them?  It might be a dumb question but I don't have experience in that.
