What is a good sewing machine for a beginner to buy?

I'm looking into purchasing my first sewing machine to make cloth diapers and things of that nature. I need one that is easy to use (I'm a newbie) and one that isn't too expensive (between 200-300). Anyone have any suggestions?

  • I have a Janome but I think it is important to know what you will be doing. If you use it to patch that is one thing but if you are making custom clothing, quilting or embroidery-that is another use entirely.
Get discounts from an MSN search at a cashback store.

  • You will probably find that there are many other things you decide to start making once you get your machine. If none of it will involve embroidery, then the $99 Singer at walmart, or even one of the brothers (there is one perfect for sewing and even allows quilting for $79) at walmart will be more than adequate.

If you decide you are interested in embroidery, then you will need a machine that does embroidery. I believe there is a brother that does embroidery for less than $300. It may be one of the models they used on project runway.

I say get the $99 Singer for now and save the rest of the money. If you find that you want an embroidery machine, then you could go for the Brother.

  • Do not buy a cheap machine. Cheap=less than $150ish. Those machines cannot handle thick layers. My first machine was the cheap Brother machine mentioned above and it struggled to sew the crotch of denim pants (where there are four layers of denim at once). You want a machine that can handle thick layers. Walmart has a Brother Project Runway edition that does good. There are lots and lots of options out there. Make sure you keep the receipt and it has at least a one or two year warranty. If you try it out and it doesn't sew the way you need it to, return it for a refund. Keep the original box and tape the receipt to it so you don't lose it. You need to keep the box just incase you have to return it. Don't buy it then let it sit without using it. Use it as soon as you buy it so you don't go past the return policy time limit for whatever store it is.

  • You don't have to spend a lot to get a machine that will do all the basics. I have a Kenmore from Sears that does a great job.....easy to use (I'm pretty much a beginner)....and was only around $100.

  • I strongly suggest going to a sewing machine dealer. They will let you try all the machines. They will have many different price ranges. Some dealers even have used machines that are more cost effective. They will also be a big help after you buy your machine from answering questions and service for your machine. And... if you really like sewing they will often take your machine on a trade for an upgrade! BONUS!!!
