Why do kids need cell phones?

My son is in the 5th grade and many of his classmates received cell phones for Christmas. My son has his own business and could easily afford a cell phone but he realizes that it is a liability and not a necessity for him. When kids grow up to become adults they will have plenty of time to have bills so why are we starting them off that way now? I'm just curious if you feel that a child having a cell phone is a asset or a liability?

  • I bought my son a cell phone last year when he was in 6th grade. I pay the bill, the phone is in my name, but he does chores to earn minutes. Honestly I was hesitant at first. But it's nice to know that if he goes for a bike ride or is at a friends house I can easily get a hold of him.

  • I dont think I'd get one for a my son until he was like 11 and he could ONLY use it for emergencies. I like the idea of being able to get ahold of them if they are away from me.

  • I would only get my child a cell phone if they were going to be away from me, and it would be one of those phones that was only for emergencies. =] I didn't have a cell until I was 18.

  • I have known a couple of moms who gave their kids cell phones for different reasons. One mom did it for safety, because her son had to walk home from school alone. The other mom then when the kids went to dad's house (divorced) they could call if he dropped them at the mall so he could "do his thing".

I can understand their reasoning, but I think it is up to each family to weigh the pro's and con's.

  • My mom got a cell phone for my brother when he turned 12, and since then she has had to have every option taken off the phone so she doesn't end up with 400$ cell phone bills every month.. it's not a good idea, but my brother has seizures, and she wanted him to be able to call from friends houses in case of emergency (he can tell when he's about to have one).

  • We bought our daughter's cell phone when she entered 6th grade. It was a prepaid one for emergencies. ( Needing a ride home, being scared while walking home etc. ) That thing was expensive! You had to pay whether you used it or not.

She received a new cell phone when she entered high school. It is 45.00 a month unlimited text and talk from Cricket. There are times when I want to throw it out the window. Yet, It gives me added security to know that I can get a hold of her or vice versa. There are no pay phones anymore not even in the school.

  • My daughter is in fifth grade this year. She has had a cell phone for over a year now. The main reason i got it for her is, she goes to her dads every other weekend. She cant stand to be away from me for a day without talking to me. Her dad wont let her use his phone to call me, so she uses hers. We have a family plan so it is only one bill a month. The next reason is in case of an emergency. 911 is automatically stored in her phone. She walks to school every morning. This world is a crazy place. I want to give her a way to get ahold of me or the authoritys if needed.

  • We got our daughter a phone when she was 13. She wanted to participate in the summer program at school and rather than have her walk 2 miles (each way ) she rode the city bus. The phone was in case she got on the wrong bus or emergencies. She is in high school now and catches the school bus at 6am. I like knowing that she can reach DH or I if she needs to. We have a family plan with free cell to cell so even with 4 people on the plan we don't use up all our minutes.
