Are Chihuahuas good with children?

we are about to get one! I have two small children. What can you tell me about them? yes, i've looked into the information on line. but, I would like to have insight from actual owners rather than a book. ya know?

Thanks!!

  • I dont own one but my grandma does, and my aunt owns his brother and sister. The brother and sister are GREAT they love kids, but my grandmas dog is a lil bastard, he always tries to bite my DD, even if she just walks in the room...he is like that with all kids under 4! But like I said the other two, born in the same litter are AMAZING, I honestly dont think it has a whole lot to do with the breed (i know it does a little) but I think the way a dog behaves id based on how they are raised and treated!! Good luck! I hope this helps!
PS let him get used to your kids and keep a close eye on him for about a month...that should be long enough to tell you if he will be ok with them, and teach your children to STAY AWAY FROM HIS FOOD! That is the number one reason kids get bit!!! and also teach them to be very nice to him!!!

  • I don't think you'll regret it. I grew up with one and he loved my mom, but he could be very protective of her even with us kids. He could be a real stinker. They can be passive aggressive. I have a five year old now, his name is Pepe Le Pew. He's so sweet, but when he plays he's very viscous. Yes he barks when he hears something. I have a friend with two and hers are very sweet females. Chihuahuas love to be under the blankets and sleep a lot. Mine has a bed with a big blanket in it. They shake a lot when they are excited. Potty training can be a chore w them sometimes. So stay on top of him/her from the beginning.Don't give them table scraps, dangerous

  • i have a chihuahua and a chiweenie. i would never recommend a chihuahua 4 kids, or n general lol! i love my dog...but he's a pain n the butt! he's never been house broken (he's 11 now) and evryone i know that has a chihuahua says the same thing. he's pretty good with my kids, but they still have to b careful with him or he'll freak out and bite thm, and when other children come over i don't let them play with him.
my chiweenie however is the best dog ever!the kids can play with her like a normal dog and she gives hugs and is sosweet 2 everyone.i say go with mutts! :)

  • We have tried numerous breeds of dogs, because my son has allergies and can only be around certain ones. Chihuahuas have been a good choice for us. We have one that is almost 6 years old, and she adores the kids. Recently, we bought a new one for my son to use as a therapy dog. He is the absolute BEST chihuahua ever!!! He loves everyone, covers my son with "kisses" and believe it or not, he never, ever barks. He has had no formal training yet, but he uses a pee pad, and he has blessed our home from day one. Because of this little guy, we've decided to try to breed chihuahuas ourselves (wish us luck!!). You do have to be careful around them though, because they are so small and love to follow you everywhere you go.
If you don't mind the year round shedding, Pugs are also great. They are just little "clowns". We also have one of them, and he can make me smile no matter how bad my day has been.

  • Chihuahuas are vicious little @$$holes! They can open arteries in your ankles! They also hate kids, and kids can accidentally hurt them badly because they are so small. Actually kids and chihuahuas are not a good mix. They also yip-and yip-and yip 24/7, and you wouldn't believe how much noise can come out of such a little dog.

  • My baby you see pictured is a schnhuahua. Her mom was chihuahua and her dad was schnauzer. She is great with my grandkids who age from 1 yr to 5 yrs old. Edward, the 5 yr old, has treated her like a baby since we got her and to Milla, the 1 yr old, she is a "cack" & gets Patted with the heavy hand of a 1 yr old. She loves her grandkids!! She doesn't like teenagers or adults.
I think, like every breed, it depends on the dog and how they are raised.
BTW my daughter with the 1 yr old has a Jack Russell and was told NOT to have him around kids..yeah right!!! He loves his baby!!

  • Chihuahuas are nice but tend to be a little yappy and can be pretty vicious. They can also have a tendency to nip. I would go with another dog. I would stay away from any sort of herding dog as they usually have a tendency to herd children (I know right!!) and nip at their heels (it's how they herd). I do however have a Pembroke Welsh Corgi who is a herding dog and he's awesome. He's the best with every kid I know and has never bit anyone unless he was playing, but I don't let him play with younger kids because I know that he might nip at them when they're playing. My dog is also pretty young though, so he's still real playful. Older corgis, however, would be great :)

Also, here is a link that has the results from a temperament test for most dog breeds, and Pit Bulls are higher than Golden Retrievers so the answers may surprise you! PS: The higher the % the nicer the breed :)
