What should I do if my baby has a cold?

any suggestions for what I can do for my baby, he has a stuffy nose, which when he inhales too heavily makes him cough, and discharge from one eye. as of yesterday he has also decreased how much he is eating, so he is getting much less fluids than usual. is 4 months too early for pedialite? does anyone own the electric nasal aspirator? i don't have any luck with the bulb ones.
Thanks

  • He could have a virus or a respiratory infection. You need to take him to the doctor.

  • The inhaling and coughing part makes me think of bronchitis. I suspect he has a cold, but at this young age I'd get him checked. It could be a sinus infection that is dripping down to his lungs- I get that several times a year. It would also account for the eye symptom. Perhaps you should call his doctor and ask, or take him to an urgent care center that is open today.

  • His eye could have a blocked tear duct, very common in infants. Just use a warm washcloth and gently clean it away a couple times a day.

  • it sounds like some sort of infection, if it turns green or his eye gets red then it could be pinkeye.. either way I would take him to the doctor.

  • my daughter just had a cold which produced eye secretions. Wipe it away with a warm washcloth, it is still bothering him after a few days call the doc and see if you can't get some eye drops or ointment. For the runny nose, try saline nasal drops first then suck, make sure you get a good seal around the nose. Hope he feels better soon. Doctors can't do anything for a cold, it is a virus.

  • If your child has a clogged tear duct, put breast milk in it every hour. I did that for my daughter when she had one and it healed over night. SERIOUSLY! :) No meds needed. Contact me if you would like more information.
