How much do you spend on school clothes?

How many outfits or items do you buy? Do you only buy things on sale? Do you put a spending limit before you go shopping?

  • I have a figure in mind, I see what I can get on sale and I buy items that are not on sale if the girls really like them. My goal is to get them five bottoms and ten tops for school. Unfortunately, here in the NE, we have hot when school starts, then cool, then cold and layers are a must as well as summer, fall and winter clothing. I like to get short sleeve or three quarter sleeves with jackets, sweaters to put over them. If I can find the pants that unzip to be capris and shorts, I buy at least two of those. I shop almost exclusively at Kohl's and spend about two hundred a season on each girl. That is minimum and usually they have some left overs they still wear from the Spring line! That doesn't include shoes, coats, socks, underwear, gloves, etc.

  • I didn't know how old your kids are. Mine are 16 and 11. Dressing a young family is much easier and cheaper. I would start at second hand stores that have good selections. There is one near me that has only designer clothes and they are in good shape for the younger kids. I still would try to do five bottoms and ten tops because it's easier to get a variety of outfits. That's for a five day school week. I could get that for five dollars or less a piece, so $75 max. That may be too much and you should have a budget so you know what you can afford in that catagory. There is nothing wrong with five bottoms and five tops and match them for ten outfits. I dressed my youngest in the oldest's clothes for about five years.

  • We homeschool so my kids really don't NEED "school clothes and gym shoes", but I still spend about $50 a kid (I have 3).

  • My kids have so many clothes now that I buy throughout th eyear. I always get them one new outfit for school and I buy another winter outfit for them for Christmas. I am looking at $200 for 3 kids for back to school outfits.

  • I agree with lbelongtogesus... we don't have the money to come out and spend it right before school starts, so we just get it when ever they need them through out the year.. much cheaper on us.. and typically we buy clearence...

  • I have a teenager. She will be getting $750.00 this year. This includes gym shoes and gym uniform. I am home schooling my middle schooler this year. Last year I spent about 400.00 on him. Unfortunately they are both out of the kids section and the great deals.

  • I send my son off to school in the stuff he wore over the summer just cause it's so hot when school starts in late August. I don't normally buy anything until his birthday in September and then will pick him up some new jeans. I don't buy alot of warmer clothes until Nov or closer to Christmas. My niece and nephew however seem to get lots of new school clothes, although they still have things that look new and spend about 300 on each kid - I think that's just a waste as they still have clothes that fit and look very nice.
I won't buy anything unless my son has outgrown stuff. Since I only bought two new pairs of pants last year he'll need some, but will put it off until we can afford it and then probably buy at thrift stores or walmart. Luckily he doesn't ask for the expensive stuff yet! LOL

  • oh yeah I forgot to add that when I buy my out fits I get pants a tee shirt and a long sleeve shirt for an outfit and I am so weird they have to match. But getting outfits like this saves money I still get shorts and tee shirts for the warmer climates but this saves money.
