How do I build muscle mass while losing weight?

I am 5'3" , 110 lbs... I am healthy and thin, but I don't feel strong and I feel scrawny. I've been working out with my husband, but I lost weight doing it-- I don't want to lose weight I want to build muscle mass and firmness... does anyone have any suggestions? Maybe I need to take in more calories?

  • Well you may initially lose a little weight if you start an exercise program, however, muscle weighs more than fat so you would gain that weight back over time.

I would suggest only doing cardio once or twice a week for about 20 minutes just to get your heart rate up. Not to lose weight. But it's still healthy to do cardio even if you're already thin.

Then just lift a lot of weights. If you are just wanting to tone, then you don't need to worry about trying to lift as much as you can and increasing that weight. A constant weight and repetitions will help tone.
If you want to "bulk" up and look muscley then you would try adding more weight and doing less repetitions.

  • One thing you need to really look at is your protein intake. You need to be taking it at least 75-100mg of protein a day and thats per a 1700 calorie diet. I'm 5'6" and weight (not pregnant) 115. Before I got pregnant, I had the same issue, I could gain muscle to save my life. But I have a friend whose bf is a personal trainer and bodybuilder (don't let bb scare you) and he gave great advice. I started drinking this stuff call Ultramet Low Carb twice a day, increased my protein by about 30-40 g a day, cut out sugar, cut out SATURATED fat as much as possible, and a number of other diet related factors. Then I started working out 5 times week, cardio 2 times for 25-30 min (its healthy and it will help lean you out to more muscle and less fat) and I stayed steady and increased my weight by a lb or two every one to two weeks. I can tell you more if you like just message me.

  • You can exercise but dont do cardio like running. You want to lift weights and eat healthy protein like lean meats and fish.
Lifting weill definitely helps you gain muscles mass.

Very very true! Like I said above, don't do a lot of cardio but it is very healthy for your heart and lungs to do some cardio. It takes the whole package in an exercise program to get the results you want.
