What substitutions can I use for boxed cake mix to make a denser cake?

I heard you could substitute milk for the water and add an egg for denser box cake. Did I remember that right? Or what are some of your substitutions to make a box cake mix better?

  • Adding milk will make it fluffier/softer. I don't know about adding egg though.

I think I've also heard of using butter instead of oil...but don't quote me, mommy brain...LOL.

  • Add a can of diet soda!! ANY flavor- if you are dong a choc cake, Diet Dr Pepper, or Coke is good- Sprite is great for a Vanilla cake- or lemon cake- it makes the cake VER moist- SO yummy and healthy!! No need to add any eggs or anything, just add 1 can of soda your fav flavor- even a strawberry soda would be good- to the mix and bake :) You can sub milk BUT make sure that it is poured in slowly and well mixed, do NOT add all milk at once :)

  • If you want a denser heavier cake add a box of instant pudding mix (the small box). My daughter wanted a strawberry cake so I used a mix but for the form I needed it to be a thick, heavy batter... popped in a box of vanilla pudding and it was fabulous!

  • Eggs and oil are very high in fat- a diet soda usually has no calories, but always has less fat then even one egg :) - to answer the anonymous question..

  • Sometimes I just add the oil and egg, no water, and make drop cookies.

  • I usually use egg substitute(instead of eggs)and apple sauce( instead of oil). I also keep it in the fridge so it doesn't go bad.
