Should I get another pet immediately after the loss of a pet?

She was hit by a car last night right in frout of me. We live by a busy street and she never really gose near it but last night she was chasing a cat and I called her back to me and when she started to come to me someone hit her....I feel like its MY fault. I keep replaying it in my head. I have not stoped crying cents last night. She was my BABY. I raised her from day one. she was in our family pictures, She went on trips with us. She was just my other kid. Now she is gone. and My family keeps trying to give me another dog but I do not want another,I just want her back . My question is should I get a new dog would that help me???

  • When you get a new dog, you won't be "replacing" her; you will be getting a new member of your family to love. Everybody I know who has gone through this swears the best way to heal is to get another dog to love. I am very sorry for your loss.

  • I am so sad for you and your family..My dog of 14 years had to be put to sleep last year. It is so hard to lose a loved pet. I would say wait a little while so you can think about what type dog etc..It is a commitment for a long time. However, If you feel the time is right then do it. Love never dies,,see rainbowbridge site.....

  • Like pp...I also had to put our sweet old dog to sleep last year. He was 16 years old and cancer ridden. He was very special to the entire family. I had never experienced a loss of a pet before as when I was a kid all our dogs just ran away. But it was far more upsetting than I thought it would be. We did get a new puppy and we love her just as much but still miss our other dog. Like you, we have pictures and they are a comfort. Get your new puppy...because that dog will be a very lucky puppy indeed to have all that puppy love you have to give. {{ HUGS }}

    P.S. The death of your dog was not your fault. It was an accident and unfortunately accidents happen : (

  • Give it a few days to heal and grieve over her. what  has happened,happened and nothing can change that . It will take awhile for things in your mind to settle down. After you feel better, then think about a shelter dog that's sitting at the pound or shelter that needs  someone to love them. GO WHEN YOUR HEART IS READY TO LOVE AGAIN.  Don't just rush into anything, give yourself a little time to heal. The and only then can you be ready to give love again to another furry friend that needs you. I am so sorry about your lose, and may you know your pet does not blame you. We live on a busy street too and we worry about this happening. No one goes out without a lead attached to me to ensure their safety from some idiot that can't slow down in a neighbourhood to ensure no child or dog are injured. So learn from this issue so that it may never happen to someone you love again.

  • i similar situation happened to me when i was a teenager. but it wasnt my dog..i was in my front yard and my neighbors dog was outside in their front yard, i called her name and said dont come over here..well since i said her name she went running across the street and this huge truck ran her over and crushed her pelvis. she bit the shit out of my hand becuase i went to put my hand under her head to comfort her and she bit out of pain..i still reply it in my head and feel its completely my fault she's dead and i felt even guiltier becuase it was my neighbors 10 yr old sons dog. they still dont blame me, and what happened last night was Not your fault. it happens. if you feel you should get a new puppy now, then get one. the puppy will get the best love ever from you! im sorry for your loss

  • I'm so sorry. It was an accident though, you shouldn't feel like it's your fault! My SIL had to put her dog down last year. They ended up getting a new puppy right away, and she said it really helped. Her son was very attached to the dog, now he's just as attached to the new one. But I think it's a very personal decision. I don't know if I would want to get another one right away if something happened to my dog. If I were you, I would take a couple of days to think about it. So sorry for your loss.

  • Poor puppy. I am sorry your dog had to die like that. :( Give yourself time to grieve, when you are ready for another dog, you will know. And when you do get another dog, NEVER let it run loose. Either put up a fence or keep your dog on leash when it is outside.
