Is a blood pregnancy test or a urine pregnancy test more accurate?

Hello ladies i have a question for you guys. I have some pregnancy symptoms, and i been spotting brown blood this month as well as last month. So i decided to go to Planned Parenthood to get a blood test but the doctor didn't want to make me a blood test because she said that now a days the urine test is more accurate than the blood test. How true is that? By the way the urine test came back negative but i feel pregnant.
Symptoms are
-weird feelings around ovaries

  • I don't believe that a urine test is more accurate than a blood test. I think that the dr was probably being lazy. I would go back or wait and test again.

  • Not more accurate, just less expensive. They made me get one after a pee test came up positive.

  • No, a blood test is not less accurate than a urine test, it is the other way around.

Both, however, depend on an accumulation of hormones, so if you test too early with either one, it will come back negative.

However, with the blood test, there are 2 different ones that can be done.

The first is a test that is ran exactly the same way as a urine test, just done with serum (a component of your blood).

The second (and the most common for people who have a blood test ordered after a positive urine test) actually gets ran through a machine and the amount of hormones are measured, allowing the doctor to see how far along you are.

I agree with Coala, your doctor was probably being lazy.

  • The blood test is far more accurate then the urine test. Hence the reason an OB would do one if you keep getting negative results from a urine test.

  • My doctor told me that a urine test comes up positive only after your hcg level is 100, but a quantitative blood test can detect any that is your system.

  • blood tests, as everyone has said, are far more accurate, because the hormones hit your blood FIRST, and have to build up to a higher level before they appear in your urine.

and regardless, it sounds like you need to know what's going on if it's NOT pregnancy, so I'd go back and ask for the bloodtest. they can say no, but they can't actually refuse you, and if you went in with this list of symptoms thinking it was something OTHER than pregnancy, they'd run the blood test first to make sure ;-)
