  • I'm pretty sure that your midwife can help you with everything pre-labor. But it is really depending on the midwide. If you want everything to be done with a midwife, find one that does it all and make sure you like her. Good luck - you are braver than I am!! I want a hospital ALL THE WAY!!

  • Midwife should be able to do everything. If you are unsure, then try finding an OB that has a mid-wife in the practice, then they can both advise you! :) Good luck with everything!

  • If you go with a midwife (and more power to you!) I would recommend seeking out a CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife). They've had actual SCHOOLING as opposed to a lay midwife who learns from other midwives, but doesn't actually have any official schooling. I am being tended to by a CNM this pregnancy, only she has a birthing center and doesn't do home births. Definitely shop around and find someone who will suit your personality. A midwife and her charge have a very special relationship and get to know one another FAR more than an OBGYN will.
Congratulations and good luck with the hunt!

  • A midwife can do whatever you may need. No need for an OB.

  • Direct-Entry Midwives do go to college and become certified, but they & lay midwives have an amazing education not to scoff at. If you are having a healthy pregnancy then you can have whomever you prefer attend you. Note that there are many differences between midwives (CNMs tend to practice much differently than DEMs, so knowing which philosophy you value more is relevant. Good luck! :-)

  • If you're not certain what to do be sure to work with a midwife who has an association with an OB/GYN for emergency situations. Do your research and don't be afraid to ask questions.
