Should I worry if my 3-month-old baby can't hold his head up?

Just as a note: Tummy time should start as early as 2 weeks of age. It doesn't have to last long but it should be introduced early to help baby begin developing their muscles and trunk strength necessary for the milestones that follow. Make it fun & interesting by engaging them with a toy (esp something that lights up and/or plays music). Some babies don't like tummy time and that's ok. But that doesn't mean don't put them on their tummy. Put them on their tummy for as long as they will tolerate it a few times a day. They may or may not cry but that's ok. They will get used to it. It's not hurting them. Over time their tolerance will improve and they'll be able to stay on their tummy for longer periods of time.

Also, for a child to hold his weight doesn't mean that he's standing on his own. It's about him pushing his feet against the surface you put him down on.

As a pediatric OT, my answer is Yes. That is a delay and there is nothing wrong with him seeing a PT at this age. The fact that you got intervention early is great and is what's best. I've seen plenty of bigger babies have delays because it's difficult for them to carry their weight and therapy has definitely helped. Especially in giving the parents the tools and information on how to help their child. He will improve as long as you continue to work with him at home as well :)

my daughter had a developmental delay, but it wasnt diagnosed for year, she then went through about 2 years of therapy along with me working with her daily, she will be 4 next month and is at age level. i would ask your babys doctor if he knows of any resources that could give different activities for each month of your babies first year that would help keep them on track that you can do with your baby.

If a doctor told you something was wrong, then I guess I'd follow their advice...but three months old is super young, and some babies can't do anything on their tummies for quite awhile! As for holding their own weight, I wouldn't think that would be an issue this young, either.

My son didn't like to hold his head up at 3 months either.. he COULD just didn't. I think he is unlikely to flip himself over to his tummy if he isn't able to turn his head from side to side. I would just spend more time on his muscle tone. I have found that if a baby is held a lot or lays around in the crib or swing all day they become very floppy. (I don't know if you baby is like that, but it's just what I tend to see) I would do more tummy time to build his neck muscles... and not worry about his legs, he doesn't need to stand yet anyway.

when we do tummy time he holds it for few seconds and it seems like he is putting a lot of effort into it like breathing faster, I am concerned that he doesn't turn the head sideways because if he were to turn over how would he breathe?

Why is he seeing a physical therapist already??
And he can't hold his head up AT ALL??

I dunno. My daughter couldn't hold her weight on her legs at that age and she never was told she had developmental delays. Keep working with him on it. As for the head, I don't remember when she could hold it up on her own..
