We have old wood paneling in our kitchen that is hideous!! Not to mention my twins are starting to peel some of it off the walls! I hate wall paper and would rather paint it. I know it can be done, I have seen some homes where people do beautiful jobs painting it. If anyone has ever painted paneling, is an oil based paint better, and do you stay away from glosses? I called the paint and wall paper store but they weren't much help at all.

Ok, first you need to sand the paneling to make sure the wood takes the paint. Then use a cloth to wipe it down to remove the dust, and then use KILZ or another good primer to go over wood. KILZ is the best and will cover a multitude of issues (like crayon, dark paint, oil stains etc). Then use a roller that has a deep "nap" to make sure you get into the crevices. You can use latex paint (and it's the safest to use around kids). In a kitchen you want to use GLOSSY paint since it will be the easiest to clean. In fact, my friends have a B&B and the health department MADE them use a glossy paint on every painted surface in their kitchen.
