How do you clean a self-cleaning oven?

We have a self-cleaning oven (and I don't mean the kind you have to clean yourself! LOL) and even after I run it through the 'cleaning' cycle it still has baked on gunk. I was under the impression you couldn't use an oven cleaner in these types of ovens. If not, what can I used to get rid of the 'gunk'?

  • ...wanted to add...I think the reason you aren't supposed to use an oven cleaner on a self cleaning is that it gets too hot and creates toxic fumes. This doesn't mean that you can't use an oven cleaner with the oven on a lower temp- what is recommend on the container, and just rinse well -or look for a cleaner that is safe for use on self cleaning ovens. The wet rag idea might work too....just make sure it stays wet so it doesn't catch fire.

  • If there is still gunk, then you may need to leave the self cleaning cycle on a bit longer. I don"t think you can use oven cleaner either. Try scraping with a plastic pancake turner, sweep it out, and run through the cycle again. If it doesn't come off, your oven is not getting hot enough and may need repaired.

  • use the microwave method...it's worth a shot. for the microwave, you get a wet rag and put it on high for 1 minute, which makes it easier to get the gunk off. maybe you can do that in the oven?

  • You can use a glass scraper (you can find in hardware department for like $3...they use it to remove paint from windows) and it scrapes stuff right up! I use carefully on my counter tops and glass top stove too!
