  • Ha! I won't even let my kids HAVE a cell phone. They're 7 and 10. I drop them off at school - there are phones there, and they use them CONSTANTLY to tell me they forgot homework or something at home. Then I pick them up and take them home. We also have phones at home, so again, no use for another cell phone. When they're old enough that they're out doing their own thing I would let them take a cell phone to school (to be left OFF all day until schools out). There are two kids at their school that we know have cell phones. It's funny to see them check their phones, cuz, really, you're in 5th grade. Whose call could you have POSSIBLY missed before 2:10???

  • My son takes his to school because he has to get a hold of me after hockey practice because his coach doesn't always follow the schedule and sometimes it is 30 minutes before or after I think he will be done that he actually is done.

  • My boys do but they are in HS & if they play around with them at school they get taken away. They know better. They work & have after school stuff & drive etc., so they do need to have them with them. My daughter got one for xmas. She is 11 (NOT my idea, the ex did it) but she does NOT take it to school. She rarely uses it actually. She said a bunch of her little friends bring theirs to school but really I dont think an 11 yr old needs a phone to begin with. She wont give the number out to the kids at school even though they ask her because she says doesnt want to get in trouble for using up her dad's minutes. lol She told me how one girl got hers stolen by another girl & it was a big mess. I think this whole phone thing has got out of hand personally.

  • My kids didn't have cells until college. There are phones in school, so there really isn't any reason for them to have one there. Just as I can't have mine at work.

  • Cell phones aren't permitted in most schools (because of cheating) and even colleges. I went to a college that had buildings that automatically disabled cell phones when you walked through the door. I've been in classrooms where if you have a cell phone and the teacher finds it, it gets taken away and your parents have to come in and take it back. My kids will have them for emergencies but it stays OFF and in the backpack during school hours. It doesn't have to be a distraction during educational times if your children understand when it is to be used and respect the rules of their parents and the school. I can't assume that because someone is a teenager that they'll automatically break the rules despite what I say. I had a cell phone end of 8th grade through 12th grade (through now) and I respected the rules and did not use it during school hours.

  • My kid isn't old enough for school yet, but I'll still answer, as my opinion on this won't change! I will never let my kids take their phones to school. That is, when they are finally old enough to even have a cell! Even then, it's only prepaid/for emergencies (like when they start to drive). Otherwise, it is an unnecessary thing to have in school, the place they are supposed to be learning, and not texting. I have many cousins who, while class is going on, are on either facebook, myspace, whatever....and chatting! Ridiculous!
