How do I stop my cat from using our bed as a litter box?

We thought that it was one cat, but we had to put her down because the toxins were too high and causing her to have seziures, and her kidneys were failing. Now it is happening again, and I am staying with my parents. We have a total of 3 cats, but we know for a fact that the girl is not doing it, because she cant hold that much pee, shes really small and there is a pic of her and one of the 2 boys. My mom said that if they do not stop, then they will have to go to the pound. Please tell me what I can do. I have a soft spot for cats, and hate taking them to the pound.

  • Sounds like they learned the behavior from the cat you put down. All you can do is make sure you have a clean litter box for each cat. Cats dont like sharing cat boxes and that sometimes can be an issue.

  • If you have 3 cats you need to have 2 litter boxes. Cats will almost never go in a dirty cat box, so you need to make sure you keep it clean. If they go to the litter box to "go" and it's too dirty they will find a nice soft spot to go..usually like a pile of clothes or on a bed. If that doesn't help it may be a urinary tract infection.

  • Good point, we do keep the litter box clean every day. Its not your average size litter box either. My mom made one with a storage container, so its big.

  • keep all doors to bedrooms closed. keep all baskets of clothes in the closed bedroom doors. If you have to get a large dog crate that the cats cannot get out of. Let them out when you can watch them. Show them where the litter box is.

  • Cats often find other places to eliminate if their litter box is not clean. With three cats, it is probably almost impossible to keep it clean without a self cleaning litter box. Check out the Litter-Robot, The Litter-Robot cleans itself seven minutes after a cat has left. This should help insure that all your cats have a clean litter box each time they return.

The Litter-Robot is a great solution for pregnant women as well as it reduces or eliminates exposure in the litter area.

  • You should have 1 more littler box than you have cats (if you have 3 cats, have 4 litter boxes). Make sure they are positioned in accordance with your cats personality (outgoing cats often like litterboxes in busy places, shy cats prefer secluded places). Do not put a roof on the litter box. Cats want to have an escape route. If there is only one way out, they may choose not to use the litter box.

If those things dont work, get your cat to the vet. It may have something going on, even outside the urinary tract. Cats dont tend to let us know what is happening, so when they start doing something unusual (even if it is minor) you should be concerned there is a health-related problem.

    hope you get it sorted.

  • I have tried multiple cat boxes, automatic cat boxes, mine flat prefer going on the carpet and clothing. Now they live in the garage but they stay in the yard.
