How often should you clean the litter box?

I have two cats, one male, one female. I have to scoop their litter daily, but I also end up changing it completely about every 3 days because it smells so much. Is this normal? I go through a big bag of Tidy Cat every week.

  • I scoop once in the morning and again at night before I go to bed. I also change the litter every week on trash day. I use litter box liners which make changing the litter really easy and usually completely wash the box with hot soapy water once a month.

  • I scoop when they have more than one poop. Usually it's everyday. I change the litter on Fridays.

  • Clay litter sucks. There is always an odor. But when you have it in your home you get immune to it. Get rid of the clay. Try Swheat Scoop. It has no scent and it absorbs the odors almost immediately. And it's flushable.

  • I only use clumping litter. I scoop once a day, and the scooping gets out most of what causes odor. I wash the boxes out maybe every other month. For odor, try putting a layer of baking soda in the pan before putting the litter in. I don't do this for clumping litter because I don't need to.

  • i scoop every day, full change once a week. I have 2 cats but use one of those large underbed storage containers as a cat box. Works great!

  • I also keep the inside door to the garage propped just enough for cats to get through and the litterbox stays in the garage so it doesn't permeate the whole house.
