Are Jon & Kate exploiting their children for money?

If you think that the mother of 14 is exploiting her children then how do you feel about John and Kate or the Duggars? How do you feel about stage mothers and parents who put their young children in pageants, modeling and acting? These children are young and impressionable and they are not old enough to know if pageantry, modeling or acting is truly where their futures lay, so how is getting your child involved in any of these things at an early age any different from this woman seeking funds b/c of the interest in her family dynamic?

  • even tho i find the Duggars to be a little weird, they raised those kids BEFORE the TV shows came a knockin. they don't need publicity in anyway, and i agree w/ PP that they use it to educate others. Jon & Kate are a funny couple, but they were working hard before the shows came knocking too. the mom worked weekends as a nurse before the show really picked up. the lady w/ 8 kids is out looking for help, the second the news picked up on the birth & survival of all 8 babies she started fishing.

and toddler pagents are sick & twisted...its one thing when a school-aged kid wants to do it...but a 3 year old? REALLY? and why can't they just wear cute little girl outfits? whats with the hair & fake tans? even celebrities & normal beautiful women dont look like that. those parents need to watch the end of Little Miss Sunshine.

  • of course they all are to an extent. The simple fact is that none of these people would have shows if it wasn't for their large families. Period.

  • I don't care about ANY of them either way...what they do with their families is their business as long as it isn't affecting mine.

  • yea, there's the exploitation element, but how in the hell are you going to support all of those kids with out some extra income, t.v is one way to do it where you still get to stay at home with the kids, I mean what daycare is going to take them?! the lady with 14 kids is nuts, but if you tried for another baby and ended up with 8, could you decide to terminate, or just to terminate a few? I don't know if I could... o and little kid pagents are just a sick display of shallow superficial parents.

  • I actually watched ONE episode of the Duggars, just to see how bizarre they really are. But, I admire their family bonds and self-sufficiency. They make their own clothes themselves, are homeschooled, etc. I do not think that they, as a family, used to show to make big bucks from. They are extremely modest. Maybe they did it to educate people on their religion and beliefs. I don't know, becuase I don't watch. just that one episode.

As for jon and Kate +8, yes, i think the money goes to all their help, and spending. I've seen a few shows and they are always on vacation. Marketing ploys. Trip to Disney, and Disney gets free PR. I don't watch that either.

but, the difference with this lady is that she wants to SELL her story RIGHT OFF THE BAT for money. no show (yet)

  • I have no problem with the Duggars or J&K+8 because they can afford their children without the media money (though I think J&K+8 may have to take a few less trips and vacations). They weren't using their children as a means to profit. People were just interested in their stories.

I have a problem with this woman because I believe she got pregnant for the sole purpose of expoiting her children for profit. I consider what she is doing a form of child abuse. This woman is trying to make money off her kids before they are even out of the hospital. She has mental problems. She is not a role model for anyone and it is so wrong for her to be using her children to make money right from the start! She planned this. She new 8 babies would make media hype and she planned on exploiting those babies before they were even out of her womb. Just as she's exploited her parents all these years.

  • As much as I despise the Duggars, they are debt free, and were before they ever started filling their quiver. For that I will give them all the credit in the world, no pun intended. Jon and Kate, not as much, and I have no respect for stage parents who whore their kids out for a paycheck. It's one thing if your kid is older and asks to try acting or singing, it's another when you decide your 14 month old just loves doing pageants and that when your 3 year old throws a screaming tantrum on the floor due to sleep deprivation it's really just nerves.

  • I love the Duggars, and I respect fully what they have done. They live debt free (as pp have said) and are very frugal. I think the difference between them, Jon&Kate plus 8 and this other woman is that media came to them, this woman went looking for media attention.
As far as pageants go: NO WAY. I just answered this question in another post, ironically. Why would you want your young child to prance around like prime beef for ppl. to "awww" over? It's something that definatly fuels the parents, not the kiddos!

  • creepiest thing about those pageants - they plaster the kids' pictures all over the web. It's like a pedophile buffet out there on the pageant message boards.
