How long after giving birth with an episiotomy do you have to wait to have sex?

I'm four weeks post-partum (this is my first baby) and I had an episiotomy - 15 stitches to be exact. How long did you wait? I'm not really rushing it because I'm breastfeeding, not on brith control yet and HATE condoms. But I was just curious ....

  • The full six weeks. There is more than one reason why they recommend six weeks. One, it raises your chance for infection if done sooner. Two: you have no idea when your egg was released making you quite fertile after birth and back to back pregnancies are NOT GOOD for your body! There are other ways to show sexual intimacy without penetration.

  • I only had 3 stitches so I was able to have sex 6 weeks after baby.

  • I waited 6 weeks, which is what my gyn/ob suggested. I hate condoms too so I started on ortha evra when I went for my first checkup at the docs after giving birth. I haven't had a problem with the bc but all women are different.

  • You can do it whenever you feel you are ready. I never had a episiotomy, but I waited four weeks with each child.

  • U NEED TO WAIT UNTIL U HAVE YOUR PP CHECK WITH THE DOCTOR TO MAKE SURE YOUR CERVIX IS CLOSED. THAT IS THE REASON FOR WAITING ON HAVE SEX. SO U DO NOT GET AN INFECTION THAT CAN TRAVEL INTO THE INSIDE WITH ALL THOSE THINGS STILL SORE AND OPEN. THE CERVIX IS THE OPENING TO YOUR UTERUS. THAT I WHAT OPENS TO 10 CMS WHEN U R REDAY TO PUSH AND THEN CLOSES DOWN AGAIN AFTER THE BIRTH OF THE BABY. ALL THOSE OTHER THINGS WILL B A CONSIDERATION BUT NOT THE MOST IMPORTANT FOR YOUR WELL BEING. BREAST FEEDING AND ALL THE HORMONES CAN MAKE IT HURT A BIT SO TAKE IT EASY AFTER YOUR DOCTOR TELLS U YR CERVIX IS CLOSED. JUST A POINT OF INTEREST--IT WAS 6 WEEKS FOR A CKUP MANY YEARS AGO BUT OBS HAVE MOVED UP THE GUIDELINES AS SO MANY WOMEN WERE HAVING SEX WITHOUT HAVING THEIR CKUP 1ST. WAIT TIL THEN, KNOW IT IS SAFE. IT DEPENDS ON HOW U FEEL& REMEMBER BIRTH CONTROL. JUST TAKE IT EASY 1ST TIME ESPECIALLY IF BF. *BIRTH CONTROL *GET THE RX 1ST!
