Is it normal for a baby to crawl on hands and feet, rather than on hands and knees?

My 6 month old is just starting to crawl but instead of crawling on his hands and knees he uses his hands and tip toes, like in a "downward dog" yoga postion. It's actually pretty funny but why does he do that? Is that normal and will he learn to crawl normally?

  • Every child crawls differently. My nephew did the army crawl. My niece dragged one leg. Whatever works for him is what is normal.

  • Very normal. Some babies will graduate to the "regular" crawling position through trial and error and some will go right to walking. My daughter started with an army crawl, then a "regular crawl" and has recently started the downward dog as you so appropriately called it. She just took her first steps last weekend so anything is possible.

  • Mine only does that crawl when crawling into our bathroom. I don't' think she likes the tile. Otherwise she crawls normally.

  • I was wondering the same thing! As my son started crawling at 9 months doing the "army" crawl and by 9 1/2 months was doing this feet and hands thing I've heard called the "crab" crawl and "bear" crawl. He just turned 1 yesterday and is still doing it! Its pretty funny and gets alot of people laughing at him with his butt in the air! I hope he starts walking soon though!

  • My son just started crawling a little under a month ago and he started with a sort of tummy shuffle. Now, he uses his hands, one knee and foot. I thought it was kind of odd at first, but now that I've met other moms whose sons have had a similar crawl I'm not worried.
