Do you think tweens should have cell phones?

Some of my friends, whose children are 11-13 years of age have a cell phone. I can see how it makes keeping in contact with your child easier and gives them a phone in case of an emergency, but do view it as necessary for a child to have a cell phone?

  • I think it depends on your family's situation and the maturity level of the child. 2 of my kids, ages 13 and 14 have cell phones. The 13 year old has to have it cause he has to call his father, who works nights and sleeps all day, to wake him up to come pick him up. Other than that he never uses the phone except for emergencies. My 14 y/o SD on the other hand has to be monitored like a hawk because she has racked up the bills enormously. Now I pay to have parental controls on her phones. She can only call certain people certain times of the day and only a set # of texts per month. After that, nothing till the next month. So, like I said,I think it depends on your situation and the child.

  • i do not believe that they need one. if they are away from you they should be with an adult or at a place where they have access to a phone. i see no reason for cell phone unless there would be no access to another phone.

  • mine don't. people have survived hundreds of years without them. they really have no need too be many places that do not have phones and even if they are, there should be adults there (who can get to a phone or use their cell phone)

  • Nope. My son (13 years old) is one of the only one of his buddies that doesn't have one. I don't see a reason for it. We always know where he is. There are phones at school if he needs to talk to us for anything. We will think about it when he starts going out with his friends or driving.

  • I agree with Crazy-Steph..

    I don't see a reason for a pre-teen to have a cell..

Who are they going to talk too...

In my opinion it is a waste of money..

    Everyone is different tho..

  • My son in going to be 13 and has had one for over a year. It has no internet or camera. Nothing special and all he can do is talk or text and I do check his phone. It is necessary because he walks home from school and I wanted him to have one for emergencies. He is also home alone and seeing we have no landline, he needs a way to communicate with others or call someone in case of emergency. He isn't allowed to program phone numbers until i approve of the person. He doesn't give out the number without my permission either. He also knows that if he messes up one time, the phone is gone.
