How often is the baby's gender identified incorrectly in an ultrasound?

I am just wondering. Have any of you had the experience of the ultrasound being wrong when your baby was born? and if you have was it predicted to be girl and turned out to be boy or the other way around?

  • a relative told everyone she was having a girl confirmed by ultrasound. her parents went and bought and every one else too everything pink. we all were shocked totally shocked to find out it was a girl. I was shocked because they believed it was a girl. yellow is a beautiful color for walls bedding for a crib til baby born. So much of baby clothing for newborns is really neutral too. I don't understand why moms have to know what it is before birth? I have three kids and did not want to know before birth and neither did my husband. why not just do up the nursery til birth in yellow and then add curtains and more clothes sex certain after birth? Never understood that. Ultrasounds have shadows, baby's moving around. it's pure luck to know ahead of time from either us or amnio.

  • well I wouldn't say it was the ultrasound that predicted the wrong sex, but rather the ultrasound tech that predicted the wrong sex.

  • An ultrasound tech could be wrong. I work in radiology, I'm not an ultrasound tech, but a nuclear medicine technologist. It helps to know how much experience the tech has and not to mention if the baby is showing off. Sometimes girls can look like boys because they can be swollen down there and look like boys. Boys are easier to till right after they pee they may get a little erection. All this information is stuff I have learned from working around radiology. My coworkers were able to tell me what I was having both times before my actual scheduled OB ultrasounds.

  • they can be wronge but I don't know I think I would wait on painting the walls but buy cute stuff for both cuz totally pink would be bad for a boy but girls can wear or be in a blue bedroom

  • Even though technology has improved and technologists are trained to read the sonogram images better, they are not 100% effective.
Never rely on only one ultrasound for the gender of a child - more than 2 at different times during the pregnancy confirming the same gender is best.

  • I tried the gender prediction test with my first pregnancy and it was 100% right about my baby boy! Now 2 years later, I decided to take the fortunebaby gender prediction test again with my second pregnancy and it said that I was having a girl. I went for my 20 week ultrasound last week and it confirmed that ,sure enough, It's a Girl! It's so exciting! Thanks -Happy Mom of 2:-)
