How do I apply for financial assistance for college?

Here's the thing. I'm young, single (well also seperated from my husband who is not my children's father) and broke. I'm starting college next week and I need some help here. Any kind of assitance grant or student loan (which I'm trying to avoid) will help. Anyone here in college and know of any assistance I might try for?

(If you have nothing nice or helpful to say please don't respond.)

  • How are you starting college if you don't have the financial part taken care of? You should have applied for financial aid before hand. Or at least thats what I had to do.. Go to fafsa.com, that should help you...

  • I was going to say fasfa also.

They have government grants there they also have loans and some of them are deferred so you don't have to pay thme until you graduate. Just be careful of those because if you don't pay them back in time they will garnish your wages.

Best place in the world to start. They will evaluate your income level and family you have to support and decide how much you need to contribute and then let you know what student grants or loans you can get.

  • And don't be afraid of student loans...yeah, paying them back sucks but if you want the degree bad enough, you'll find a way to make it work.

  • Call the financial aid office at the school and make an appointment - you're better off to get your fafsa filled out first, but with or without it, there are tons of scholarships and grants for moms/women. Get ready to write a million essays, and definitely reasearch the MLA or APA writing guidelines before you start writing them.
