  • I am getting concerned. I just read two articles today on a news site. 8 American's have now died from pig flu and it's rampent in Mexico. I'm wondering how much farther it will spread.

  • They have confirmed cases in NY...I think 75 kids from one school. There are also suspected cases in Kansas.

  • 8 Americans, now 10 with the Kansas cases, have it. No Americans have died yet. 20 confirmed deaths in Mexico but up to 68 suspected. 8 probably in New York at a school and 1 more probably in Texas. What they have seen in the US doesn't seem particularly harmful but highly contagious. If it does turn out to be highly contagious, the WHO will probably recommend no travel in or out of th US, Mexico and possible Canada if thy start seeing cases.

  • If this just started breaking out, how come "they" can test for it so quickly? This is a man made virus, and that's what kind of scares me. There's reports of something missing Fort Detrick, MD, which is where USAMRIID is located--home of all sorts of deadly viruses and bacterias.

  • Yes, I am worried about it. However, to keep it in perspective, the symptoms are similar to a typical flu virus. Yes, we are seeing fatalities in Mexico, but the 'regular' flu has fatalities too- there have been no further fatalities in the past couple of days. The victims in the US have not died and have not had contact with one another, which indicates a chain of transmission that is not being detected- the 'good' news in this is that none of these others in the chain of transmission have been sick enough to come to medical attention. So yes, it's scary and I will be watching the media closely. But in terms of virulence, so far this does not appear to be the worst case scenario.
As for how 'they' can test for it so quickly... the flu virus is only about 8 chromosomes and scientists regularly analyze the DNA of different viruses. Being able to sequence it quickly is normal, this is how flu outbreaks are tracked.

  • The troubling part about this flu is most of the dead in Mexico were 25 to 40 so it's killing people with strong immune systems. That's not a good sign as far as flu viruses go.
