Can you get pregnant after having weight loss surgery?

I was just curious if anyone had a lap-band surgery and then got pregnant. I went over this with my doctor already, but I am still paranoid that if I get the surgery and then I get pregnant, that it's gonna cause some damage. I really wanna have more babies here soon, but I also need the surgery for medical reasons. Anyone experienced in this? What happened?

  • From a personal and medical professional experience, I'll tell you this.... WAIT until you are done having children to have ANY kind of bariatric (weightloss) surgery.

  • The lap band is adjustable...so if you get pregnant, at whatever stage of your weightloss, they can let out that inner tube so you have room to eat the way you need to when you're pregnant. The opposite is true after the baby, you can have it reinflated and get back on track with your weightloss. A girlfriend of mine has done this and the lap band is honestly the best choice if you are wanting to continue having children because of the flexibility of it. She was actually able to concieve her first child after dropping some weight, something to do with the way fat cells interact with your hormones. Best of luck to you!

  • Having a lap band, losing weight, then getting pregnant is muuuuuuch safer than staying overweight and getting pregnant.

  • PS - when they let all of the fills out, you are able to eat just as much as you could before surgery.

  • I'm pregnant, and I had lap-band on November 14th, 2008.
Before I had lap-band, I wasn't able to concieve. I was (at my largest) 260 pounds,I had unprotected sex for a year and a half, and never got pregnant. Long story short, my husband returns from england after 11 months, I now weigh 164 pounds, and I basically concieved the night he got here.
I'm 14 weeks along, and so far everything is going like a normal pregnancy. I got 70% of my saline taken out of the band, and I can eat pretty well. I've only put on 4 pounds since I had the fluid removed. I was told by my doctor, to avoid getting pregnant until after a year of having the band, and even that was just a percaution and wasn't obsolutely needed. I havnt had anything go wrong with my band/pregnancy so far. :)

  • I have several friends who have either done the lap band or the gastric bypass and are now pregnant. They are having successful pregnancies so far and are following their doctors orders. I am about to have my lap band done next month and in a year I will see how my periods come and see if I wil be able to have another baby after that time. I also dont get periods and have PCOS and other health problems. I want to be healthier and even tho I had a successful pregnancy three and half years ago, I want to be able to have another one. Good luck on your journey.
