What should I do if I can't afford a car seat?

i have the crib on layaway, but my family cannot afford much for a baby shower. i'm thinking that the baby will end up sleeping in my bed and my husband on the couch! is there a better solution?

  • Both my kids slept in a playpen till they were ready for their big beds. You could check out yard sales or craigslist or your area's Freecycle to see if someone even has a crib or playpen. Some places have classes you can take and get a free new carseat when you complete them. You could always ask family or friends if they have a carseat you could use till you can afford one, but make sure it hasn't been in a crash. I hope you know that you cannot take your baby home unless you have a carseat. They go down there and make sure you buckle him/her in properly. Another idea would be to ask your church to see if someone could possibly donate these things to you, or at least let you borrow. Good luck.

  • honestly..we were dead broke when our oldest was born . We took a rectangle laundry basket and lined a kingsize pillowcase with a plastic bag and then put about 6 recieving blankets folded in half in side. Then tucked the end under. We used that for 5 weeks until we could buy the crib. It worked well. When he peed thru I only had to change the baby and a pillowcase.
My SIL use a drawer from the dresser the same way. Just be sure the 'mattress' is firm. Don't use a pillow.

  • There are a million things you can do for a crib - you may never have to buy one. BUT YOU HAVE TO HAVE A CARSEAT. Calling your (or any) church to see if they have donations.... You can do garage sales or craigs list - but you just have to hope it was not in a crash.... Please dont skip the carseat.

  • Can you afford a used Pack and Play? With a sheet on the bottom, and it's soft mesh sides, it is comfortable for babies - mine slept in one for the first couple months. You can get them used for around $20. If you are giving birth in a hospital, they won't let you take the baby home until you have a car seat. Again, used is better than none.

  • You're going to need the carseat. You aren't allowed to leave the hospital with the baby without one. I had to put my son in the seat in my room so the nurses could make sure it was secured properly before I could leave. So make that the priority, not the crib. You can get a bassinet fairly cheap and baby can sleep in that for a couple of months.

  • Well i dont know about your hospital but my hospital wont let the baby go home without a carseat. Our hospital gives them away if you dont have one and need one. Call your local hospital and ask. If not like others said your local churches and other organizations around might be able to provide one for you. Like I said call around or you could probably look online in your area and see.
As for the crib thing its not that big of an idea. You can really use alot of things for a crib. Even some churches might be able to provide you with one. If not dont freek If you really have to once you get a car seat you can use that until you get a crib. My children slept in that alot and they had a crib they just preferd the car seat. Well good luck if you need help with anything let me now.

  • What kind of programs do you have in your area. Here where i live, there is a place called birthright and sometimes they'll help you out with things (not for sure about a crib) but i know they've given out car seats, bottles, clothes n etc. And we also have a place called the nest, what you do there, is you attend meeting about pregnancy, giving birth, newborns, etc, and with each meeting you attend you get points, and with your points, you can pick out prizes, its all kinds of stuff from baby items to household items. Here, at out womens health center, they have a pamphlet with this kind of information but maybe even your local health centers or county health department, or free clinics. But a cheap way is to check ads in the paper, go to yard sales.

  • I wouldn't start the habit or your baby sleeping in your bed, thats a hard one to break when you decide you miss your husband and maybe would like to have sex.
