How do I stop my cat from biting my kids?

We got a cat this summer. We have a problem with her though. She is always biting and scratching the kids. My dd is not mean to her, she will try to hold her and pet her and she will bite and scratch. Sometimes the cat will just bite out of the blue and then run off. My son leaves the cat alone usually and when he does go around her he is sometimes mean. Just now she bit my dd while she was at the table eating breakfast. What can I do about this cat? I don't want to get rid of her, my dd loves her. I have given the cat a stuffed animal to bite. I cannot leave the kid's bedroom doors open either because the cat will go in there and bother them while they are asleep. What can I do?

  • A cat bite is a serious injury,a nd a scratch is not a deep as fangs, but can carry bacteria from the little box to your children's skin. Either get rid of the cat, or try the water bottle. One of the things that stood out of your post is that your daughter holds the cat, cat wants down, cat bites child, cat runs off. Mission accomplished. Cat got what it wanted.

Use the water bottle. I use it for my own cats when they torment my daughter's fish or my son's lizard. If they show more than a passing interst in either, I squirt. It has been really great!

  • In My Opinion, I would personally get rid of the Cat.
Keeping a cat just because your Daughter loves her is not a good reason when the cat turns around and bites / scratches her for nothing and being outright mean. That cat is a risk to your daughter, you should'nt be even asking what you should do. Cat -vs- Daughter, which is important? Was the cat a stray? Was the cat rescued from the pound? Did you get the Cat as a Adult? If yes to these questions, you don't know the history of the cats life. If the cat had a hard life, if the cat does NOT like kids and more. Get her a Kitten and start fresh. Good Luck

  • lol not that it's funny but i had the same problem with my cat. someone told me to carry around a water bottle and every time she does something you don't like , bite, scratch, hiss anything. just spray her with the water. i know it can be a pain in the butt always carring a water bottle around but it works. at first the cat will get mad and give you an ugly look but once she relizes she only gets sprayed when she does something bad she will then begin to stop. i hope this works for you as it did me. good luck. also make sure to kepp cutting the cats nails this way she can't scratch as well.

  • Kitty may needs to be taught to be nice. Kids need to do the same. The water bottle is good and so is having things for kitty to do. She may be bord and cats play rough sometimes. I have 4 and theres always one trouble maker in the bunch. When she acts like a brat we use the spray bottle when we can catch her in the act. She does play with her other sisters and brother and she is good. But sometimes she can get a wild hair up her you know what! We provide play things to use to play with her. But if you have tried all these things , then maybe you need to get her a play

  • Has your cat been spayed/neutered? Sometimes if they haven't they can be a bit aggressive..I would talk to your vet and see what they advise..Some cats are a sweeter than others..but if your kitty is in heat or can smell a cat this in heat they can be a bit tempermental..also, use a squirt bottle everytime the cat does something wrong..they do not like that at all, and it won't hurt them.
