Did your hair fall out after pregnancy?

My daughter just turned 3 months and within the past week Ive been shedding a lot of hair. My mom had warned me before I gave birth that breastfeeding would suck a lot of my nutrients therefore I need to maintain a well-balanced diet and continue to take my vitamins every day. Last night I did a google search and read of other mothers whose hair started falling out around 3 months after giving birth. They mentioned that during pregnancy the rate for hair to fall out decreases and increases after giving birth. My nutrient intake has been great so I'm assuming thats not the problem.

Does anyone have any personal experiences to share about this?

  • Stress can cause this and inadequate vitamins now too. Load up on your prenatals still. Also, remember your body has just had a major shock. You are still recovering...

  • It not just the breastfeeding all during your pregnancy your body doesn’t shed hair that much and between 3 to 6 months post partum your body sheds hair for lost time. My son is 6 months next week and i had heavy amounts of shedding for 2 or 3 months its normal your fine just remember with nursing its recommended to still take your prenatal! I'm done now with the whole shedding thing and my hair is super soft now. Good luck with nursing keep it up mama!

  • During pregnancy you do not shed the same amount of hair. So postpartum, your hair is playing catch up shedding what you built up during your pregnancy. It is completely normal. You most probably will not end up with less than you started with...

  • I went through a few months where I lost a bit if hair around my hairline/forehead area. It grew back within a few months and I had short little hairs for a while but it's all back now. I am still nursing my one year old and haven't had it happen again. I'm wondering if it's more of a hormone thing and not so much of a nutrient thing? I don't know!

  • Thanks for the fast responses! Yes, I'm still taking my prenatal vitamins and will continue to do so for a while. I heard of stress being a reason too but I've been pretty stress-free lately (especially now that my daughter is sleeping through the night) therefore I got a bit confused as to why all of a sudden my hair was falling out. Millerbabe07...thanks for sharing your experience. I feel much better now knowing that this is a common thing. I'm 5'7 and my hair is almost to my butt and although I wear it all up, I seem to be finding it EVERYWHERE!

    Thanks once again! =D

  • When this happened to me, my hairdresser explained that it's the sudden change in hormones that does it, and it is completely normal, and things will go back to the way they were before. It is just such a profound change to be pregnant, then give birth, and not be pregnant. It takes your body a bit to get used to it. And she was right, it did go back to normal. Just be patient, keep taking those vitamins and eating healthy.

  • What you read is true. Your hair doesn't shed much when you are pregnant, so you lose a little more hair after the pregnancy so your hair "cycle" can get back to normal. I really thought I was going to go bald for about a month. My hair would clog the drain EVERY DAY. It only lasted for a few weeks & I promise I didn't go bald. Just keep doing whatever you normally do & take care of yourself. Also, be gentle to your hair, maybe that will help...

  • Pregnancy does take alot of nutrients out of you and it is hormonal but taking a prenatal is not covering all your nutrient requirements. In fact alot of prenatals are not fully absorbed and you should consider a whole food nutraceutical instead. Juice Plus is a great one with clinical research behind it with a pregnancy study. My email address is eileen4jp@prodigy.net if you would like more info. Getting back to reasons why your hair may be falling out could mean your lacking in Biotin which can be taken in a pill from a natural health food store. Also thyroid issues and low iron can cause hair loss. Alot of women get hypo or hyper thyroid after pregnancy for a short time or permanently after pregnancy. Get your hormones checked out to make sure you have no thyroid issues. Eileen
