Do Labs make good family-friendly dogs?

I have three kids. I want to find a family dog I asked about a shitzu but from what I gather I dont think I will go that rought. Now I'm asking about LABS.
You ladies that have you what do you think? Good with Kids? Good family dog? We have a mid size home, we live a cross from a seven acer park so I think that is a plus for walking. Our back yark is a good size for it to roam. But if I go with one female or male? It would be fixed for sure! so which is best with temper and kids. I want a clam dog cause we live in colorado and it snows so it will be in door with me. I just dont see it being out side in the cold. Hell I wouldnt be out there. What's the average cost for an up keep for a LAB. Is there a good website that I can go to that I can get good information on labs?

  • I think labs are great pets. I have a lab retriever. Mine is a male and he was so easy to train. He is an inside dog and he doesn't make a mess or anything. They do need to be walked a lot though.
They are also good with kids.

  • I have a black lab(5 months old) and theyre very good with children, but horrible thru their puppy stage with chewing on things, even though they have chew toys of their own...Plus they stay in the puppy stage the longest out of any dog, about 3 years. their upkeep is not bad, just give them LOTS of love(labs ar horrible w/ abandonment issues) and take them to regular check ups, keep them fed. Mine is a male, and him and my 2 year old have gotten along great since day one, weve had him since he was about a month old. Ours has a bad problem w/ wanting to nibble all the time, I honestly think he just can't control it, but it doesn hurt (it did when he had sharp needle puppy teeth) but he always plays gentle and hes a very smart dog. hope this helped a lil.

  • Oh, yeah mine has abandonment issues too. He doesn't like be home alone. The only thing he does when we are gone is eat bread, if it's left out on the counter/table, and/or eat garbage. if it's still in the house when we leave. THIS ONLY HAPPENS IF HE'S HOME ALONE!!

If there is no bread or garbage to eat then he's fine and doesn't cause problems. So we always make sure those stuff are put away or removed from the house before we leave, but sometimes we forget.

  • we have had labs since my oldest was concieved. (26 yrs) They are incredible family dogs, loyal, protective and gentle if you work with them each day. As pups they are chewers..make sure you have chew toys. (avoid pigs ears)

  • I think labs are the best dogs out there for a family. I had a black lab for 9 1/2 years until she died of cancer. She was loving, protective, playful, great with other animals, very gentle and very trainable. We have a German Shepherd now because she was given to us from a family who couldn't care for her. We are a one dog owners, so after the G.S. we are going to get a lab again.
My sister-in-law has a 2 year old yellow female lab and she is an awesome dog.

  • Labs are good dogs and very smart. BUT they shed really bad and as puppies chew on everything. My parents use to breed them. I would really research the breed before buying one.
