Are you worried someone will "steal" your baby name?

I am one of those who likes names that aren't typical... I don't want my kid to be the third Michelle or Logan in the class... With my son I named him after his daddy which is a pretty common name, but this time I get to pick it out. I don't like off the wall names just something either old fashioned yet not dorky, and not common or typical. I want to tell the world but instead, I am keeping it a secret, as I am so worried someone else will steal my name...does anyone else think about that when picking out names? DO they worry other moms-to-be or friends will "steal" their names?????

  • i know how you feel...my sis-in-law just had her first last week and she took our first pick for our little man's name, Dylan, even tho the nursery and everything was done in her first pick of names, Austin. We tried keeping the names we chose a secret but, she snooped around my house when they were over for July 4th and found the boy/girl names that we had decided on. Now we're stuck trying to find another name that we both agree on. Keep it a secret.

  • Yup. lol. I'm not telling any of my friends my future baby names. They're unique and I want to keep them that way. I had a name picked out for my daughter, then my friend named HER daughter that so I had to change it. You know her excuse?...."Well you should feel flattered that I liked your name so much. It's a compliment." What? No. I was pissed. lol.

  • I always wanted to give my kids unique names growing up but now it is the trend and some people go to such lengths to make sure the name is unique it kind of seems like the unique names are now the common names. For example I have loved the name Zoe forever and I used to tell people when I was a kid that one day I would have a daughter named Zoe. They used to look at me like I had two heads and say things like why would you do that to her etc. Now it is one of the more popular names. I am still naming my daughter Zoe because I still love the name.

  • I always laugh when I hear some one saying someone "stole" their kids name. Come on, names are not owned persay and besides that there is always going to be someone out there with your name or your kids name. Unless you make up a totally made up name like "Boahogathon" or something then there is not such thing as a "unique" name. I really think ppl try too hard to "unique" anyway. Your baby is special in their own right without being saddled with a weirdly spelled hard to pronounce name.

  • I felt the same way and named my son Izaiah. I get people ALL the time either not knowing how to pronounce it or giving me weird looks and telling me "thats different" but for goodness sake all I did was change the S to a Z and spelled it how its pronounced!!!! My name is Jessica and I still cant go out in public without hearing my name somewhere. So I wanted to be different but like you said, not off the wall and apparently Im confusing people lol. I dont care tho, I like my sons name :-) Just be confident in whatever you do, cuz afterall that'll be your kids name forever!

  • Oh :-) and no, I didnt worry about anybody "stealing" the name. But maybe because I didnt know anyone else pregnant with a boy at the same time I was lol.

  • My daughters names are Mckenna, Delanie, and Clover...all unique, but still heard of. I told everyone my names, because honestly...the older they get the more popular the names will be. For 6 years I never met another Mckenna, in the past 3 months I have met 5...including a new niece that's mother recently married into our family. at some point people are going to know his name, and at some point you will meet someone with that name. It is kinda fun to keep a secret though...
