Can I switch my toddler to whole milk cold turkey?

Hi moms! I was just wondering if it's OK to go "cold turkey" with formula and switch to whole milk the day (or week) our baby turns 1. He's been eating string cheese and that yo baby yogurt for several weeks now with no problems, so I'm hoping he'll make the switch to milk just fine. Just wondering if there's any need to sort of wean him off formula or something.

  • I did...I was worried that she wouldn't take it so I saved half a can of formula to have as a back up if she wouldn't take it but she did and never looked back. If he takes it and doesn't have any reaction to it, go for it.

  • It depends on your child. There is no magic switch on their first birthday. You should work on eliminating bottles during the day and only eating "real" food. Your goal with the milk should be to have him drink 8-16 oz. a day. As long as he is getting all of his nutrients from food, not formula, the need for formula is no longer there.

  • If you switch him, he wont need baby vitamins unless hes got some sort of deficency. Hes already getting plenty of vitamins and nutrients from his baby food and from the milk. Make sure its vitamin D milk. Thats the best for them. If he likes it and doesnt have a bad reaction to it, its fine to just go cold turkey. But just keep a close eye on him. My daughter wouldnt switch to just straight milk so i had to start out splitting her drinks with half milk and half formula and slowly increase the milk and decrease the formula until she was completely weaned off.

  • Most doctors say to make the switch gradually by adding a little bit at a time to bottles and gradually increasing the amount. It's a new taste for them, and since you don't know how he'll react, it's definately better to start slowly. If he ends up being highly allergic, you don't want him to have downed 8 oz of milk and have to rush him to the hospital. It's better to give him an ounce or so and see how he reacts to it.

  • Yes you can, and if you plan on getting him off the bottle soon I would suggest that when you switch to whole milk you switch to the sippy cup at the same time. You kill two birds with one stone!
