Can my dog get sick from eating cat litter?

Can this hurt him?? I just got my first kitty yesterday and my beagle keeps sticking his head in the cats litter box. I just wanted to know if my dog can get sick.

  • If you just got the cat and he's starting to eat the cat food he will get the runs because he isn't used to it. Is there a place you can move it that the dog can't get to it?

Here's a link that might help you with understanding why your dog is eating his own poo.

There are products out there that you mix in with their food in the hopes it makes their poo taste bad so they wont eat it.

As for your dog sticking his nose in the cat litter, if you keep it cleaned out I'm sure he'll be fine.

  • I dont think so. He just sticks his noes in it. Can eating the cat poo make him sick? my dog eats his own poop so I can see him doing it to the cats too. he also eats the cat food. Can that hurt him?

  • dont mean to be gross, but cat poo is like almond roca for dogs. your dog is most likely eating the poo. my dog did this too. what i did was turn the opening towards a corner, your cat can get in but the dog cant. once in a while my dog would turn the box around to get in there. you will have to put something heavy on top so the dog cant move it

AND FYI a dog who is eating his own fecies is NOT good honey. You need to take him to your vet.

  • Every dog I have had ate cat poo. I have 4 cats in my house and a 6 month old poodle. I have caught him with a poo log, chomping on it like it was candy. Oooo, so nasty! I had just eaten breakfast and needless to say I almost lost it!
I clean my box at least three times a day so he won't have a ready supply. LOL He eats cat food too and he hasn't got sick yet.

  • Eating the cat poo can make your dog very ill, because of some of the chemicals they put in the litter to keep the odor at bay. Can you put it in a basement and make a kitty door? That is what we did, big enough that only the cat can fit through. Almost all dogs will eat cat feces if given the opportunity, however if he is eaten his own it could be a sign of something more. Could be just not getting enough nutrition in his diet. Might try a different brand or getting doggy vitamins. However you have to get him away from the litter, it can kill him.

  • ahhh....'kittie treats'. Keep dogs out! Kitty-poo has bad bacteria and parasites that can make your dog sick!
