Is it ok to drink alcohol while you're nursing?

I'm feeling guilty about having a few beers. My pediatrician says 2 is okay, but I was wondering what other moms would say?

  • Its ok to drink while breastfeeding as long as its in moderation. Heres a website that might help you.

  • As long as you drink in moderation. I would breastfeed my son, and then have one drink with my meal (and only on rare occassions). It was not a routine habit. If you are still worried, you can always be honest with your MD and ask him.

  • I occasionally have a drink after pumping and wait about 2 hours after I finish the drink and then pump and dump. This is so I don't feel guilty about putting alcohol into my child. You shouldn't feel guilty about having a couple of drinks because you sometimes need to feel like an adult and not just a mom. Good luck!

  • Yes you can.... my LC said as long as you can saftly hold your baby... you can breastfeed..... and you don't need to pump and dump..... it's the same as in your blood stream... it just works its way out.... and as for nicotene... it's still better to breastfeed if you smoke because the breastmilk helps counteract the effects of smoke on a babies lungs.....and the nicotene is a fraction of what goes into your body....

  • BabyDio has it right....Please don't pump & dump, there's no reason for it- you're just wasting your precious milk. It metabolizes in your milk the same as it does in your blood- you just need to give it some time. I was told in my breastfeeding class that the same rules apply to drinking & nursing as do to drinking & driving. If you want to have a few drinks, pump ahead of time, and then there's no need to feel guilty- you can enjoy yourself while your baby still enjoys mommy milk. :)

  • I would drink a wine cooler or a beer like once a week to relax. I never pumped my milk out and threw it away, (like some suggest to pump and throw away for 24 hours.) If you don't drink alot, then you should be fine. All I drink is water, so if I want to have a drink then I do it. I don't overdo it though. It has never done anything to my baby.

  • The general rule of thumb to follow is safe to drive = safe to nurse. Not, if you FEEL like you are safe to drive, but if your BA level is in the safe to drive range. Generally you can have 1-2 drinks and still safely nurse, anything more, you should wait approx. 2-3 hrs per drink to nurse. No need to pump and dump, unless you are pumping to relieve engorgement. Pumping will not rid the milk of alcohol, only time will.

  • i have had one TINY glass of wine and it was right after i fed her. i wouldn't have had more. if i knew she was going to sleep thru the night then i may have a drink or two after she went to bed, but i don't trust that. i know what i eat/drink has an affect on her. more than 3-4 times i have had a couple cookies or something chocolatey around dinner or so and when she nursed before bed she woke up a couple hours later and would not go back to sleep or sleep the next day!!! normally she sleeps thru the night. if a cookie affects her that bad i will not risk putting caffiene, alcohol or anything unhealthy like that in my system
