What should I do if I can't afford high quality dog food?

So with everything's cost just sky-rocketing; dog food isn't any exception. Do I compromise my dog's health and buy a cheaper dog food? Or do I need to start looking at other options? We went through this last year too, and so we found another dog food with comparable ingredients, but other things did get sacrificed too. I really don't want to feed them something unhealthy!

  • We have 2 beutiful golden retrievers. We give them Pedigree and sometimes Beneful.
And I know I shouldn't do this I admit I mix it with our left overs they love that.

  • i have a chocolate lab and we feed him Natures Recipe. it is the best stuff. it has no bi products. all natural. vitamins, lamb and all the good stuff that a healthy dog needs. you can get a 40 lb bag for cheap. we also tried nutra max. that was good to.

  • Buy the best food you can without many fillers. The cheap cheap stuff is garbage for dogs and not good for them.

  • Buy the good stuff and don't over feed. There are a lot of pets over weight. So no matter what you feed, do it in accordence with the direction and the excerice your pet is getting on daily bases. I have 4 dogs that come daily for doggy treadmil time as they are way over weight and this can be very bad in the long run for your pets. The parents are learnig to give the right amount for them so they have healthy pets.

  • We have a St. Bernard and we were worried about the cost of dog food because I can't go out and buy a little bag, we went to petsmart and talked to them and they were explaining to us that premium dog food is better for them than the cheap stuff but they do have their own brand which is comparable to Iams I think it's called advantage and it costs a little less.

  • i work for petsmart actually, and our store brand is consider premium (with no fillers or by-products) it is very comparable, in quality that is, to nutromax. It is on the cheaper side too. The reason premium foods are a better choice, even with the prices today, is because when your dogs food is full of things like corn (as it is in pedigree, beneful, and anything else you can buy at a grocery store) they eat more of it...which ends in more poo.. and they will go thru it alot faster than if they were to get full nutrition. Vet bills are also VERY expensive... so its good to keep buying the quality stuff in the long run

  • Please, please...do your research on dog food. Go on the internet and see the complaints on several brands of dog food. My dog was losing hair scratching and losing weight...I know it was due to the dog food brand. I did my research on the internet and was completely in shock that this brand is even still being sold in strores today. Now I use Blue...dog food...and the results are amazing! My dog is back to being her healthy self again!! Just do yourself that favor, check the internet you will be amazed at what you will find.

  • Blue Buffalo, Royal Canin, and PetSmarts store brand are 3 of the best out there. Look on the labels, the first 3 ingriendients should be meat of some kind. NOT chicken meal, just chicken, lamb, beef, etc. When it says meal behind it, that means it just bones and feathers and leftovers that are ground up, there's no real meat in it at all. Blue Buffalo is one of the best I've ever seen....check out their website.
