How do I care for a newborn baby boy's circumcision in the first few weeks?

I am having a little boy and the only thing that I am actually worried about is when he gets circumsised. I know its going to hurt him and he will be sore, but what should I put on the tip? How often? I have so many people telling me to put neosporin on it everytime I change his diper for a good week. But I am so worried it will get infected...even doing that...

  • A&D ointment every diaper change and be sure to pull the skin back. That said, you should do some research on circumcision before doing it.

A lot of moms just have it done because it's "normal"...but it's completely un-necessary!

  • I had my 1st boy this past June. He was circumsized and did great with it. It didn't bother him afterwards at all. Yes it was red but with lots and I mean LOTS of vaseline he will be fine. Main thing is to keep it lubbed and he should be fine. Our doctor told us not to put anything on it but the Vaseline.

  • Get a tube of vaseline and you put a big dab on the end with each diaper change until it's healed. Also you don't clean the area with anything except water if it gets poopy. They will teach you in the hospital how to care for it after it's done.

  • i was nervous too, especially when i changed his first diaper at home.. it was still bloody, they told me to leave his wrapping on for a few days, and let him pee thru it, and just remoisten it with vaseline. Then when their wrapping comes off, to keep wrapping it with gauze, they sent a bunch home, we cut it down, wrapped his little pecker, and you know, he didnt even notice it, they gave him a lollipop to suck on while he was in surgery, most clinics give sugar water, but the lolipop is the sugar, and they also suck on it, so it helps all ways around. We did his circumcison in the drs office because it was cheaper, its an elective and most insurances dont cover it... continue on.. hate the short responses.

  • he went in, and was out in about 30 min... my dr said it was the easiest one she has ever done... he came home and it didnt even phase him. His lips were blue for a few days from the sucker, but alas, he was happy, and thats what mattered. But vaseline every diaper change with new gauze, just dont pull on it he will pee thru it, and be liberal with the vaseline, and then he heals in about two weeks, we stopped the vaseline and gauze at about ten days if i remember right, and he was fine.. Good luck, and remember, he will be fine.!

  • I have two boys that did fine. My doctor had some gauze around the tips of my little boys. I used vaseline every diaper change and sponge bathed them. By the time his umbilical cord falls off it should be ok to submerge his little penis also. On a side note mother to mother... I asked my doctor to make sure and apply the numbing ointment before cutting. It makes the whole process more tolerable for both you and your baby ...for what it's worth. You'll do FINE!

  • I was really worried about that too. DOn't worry, it's easier than you think and except for when it's initialy done they don't seem to really be bothered by it. My doctor had us tey to keep it clean with out wiping it too hard, and just put a piece of gause on it with some vasiline to keep it from sticking to the diaper. We did that for the first week. Then after that it's still a little red but heals right up. Don't worry, you'll do just fine.

  • i had to wait to get my son circumsized... He was in nicu and two weeks later we got it done. He cried when they did it, but other than that he went to sleep right after. The pedi did a new thing with a clip and string. They clamped the skin and then 5 days later the dead skin fell off along with the plastic ring, which is called a plastabell. Ask your pedi how they will be circumsizing your son. I recomend the plastabell. And if you decide not to circumsize that is good too.
One thing though if you do is pull back the skin b/c fresh skin will grow to the tip or groove of the p-nis so make sure you pull down the skin to clean it w/ water, and to also make sure it hasn't grown together. If your worried about it sticking then use vaseline. It is nothing to worry about too much, it is a quick process and healing. if you have question feel free to e mail me.
