How do I get my 3-year-old to get rid of her pacifier?

It is limited to nap and bed time, she likes to try and sneak it when shes not supposed to have it and throws a fit when I take it away. I want her to get rid of it on her own and not cold turkey

  • Slowly cut the end off until there is nothing left to it, then she wont want it anymore. A little more each day.

Or do the pacifier fairy, tell her the fariy will come pick up her pacifier and leave a special "BIG GIRL" suprise if she can take it. She is old enough to start getting that and she might be excited enough to be happy about that.

  • My son had to throw his away, he wore them down like crazy. If she's not wearing them down though, I had a friend who gave all the pacifiers to her daughter and they went to the garbage can together. She then allowed her daughter to cut the ends off of each one. This was fun to her because she was getting to use scissors, and that's a big thing to 3 year olds! Make a game out of it and maybe even buy her a special gift. Have her pick it out before hand that way she sees what she's getting before she desicrates her binkys.

  • My son was using the silicone pacifiers, so I switched to latex and he didn't like it. So he just carried it around with him (never using it) and eventually he just gave up.

  • if you really want your child to be off from pacifiers let her thorw it in the trash and have a party after wards showing how big kid she reallly is and it might be rough for a while but if she three years old she should been off long time ago that not good for her teeth. My son really never took pacifiers the only time was right after he was born but he wan never intersted in pacifiers. good luck

  • We told my DD that there was a baby somewhere that needed a pacifier. Then asked her if she would give her pacifier to a baby since she was a big kid now. We put it out for the pacifier fairy (I think someone else mentioned that earlier) and she got a surprise the next morning (we gave her a dollar like the tooth fairy does:))

  • I say throw them out, a 3 year old does not need a pacifier, matter of fact, no baby does, they can soothe themselves if they want to. You are the parent, no child should have control over ANY adult, just keeping it real

  • I had my son give them to his baby cousin. Ryan just turned 3 when I took his away. He asked for his "plug" (his nicname for it) for about 3 days and I would always tell him that big boys dont need plugs that babies do. Then I would quickly change the subject. After a few days of getting the same answer he would tell me that spiderman dont use plugs but baby Aiden uses little does he know that Aiden wont use them!
