Can you suggest an affordable photo editing software program?

Is there ANY really good photo editing software out there that won't cost me the same amount as a month's worth of groceries? I mean, I woud LOVE to own Photoshop CS3, I know it's the best, but I cannot afford to spend so much on it. (the price on it is a little ridiculous IMO)

So do any of you know of an editing program that's close to the quality of photoshop, and FAR from the price tag?

  • Where can I get a cheap download? On the Adobe website? Or is there another?

  • I'd reccomend Photoshop Elements 7.0 It's new on the market but has a lot of really great features that the older versions don't have. And it's not going to be nearly as expensive as CS3.You can go to Adobe's website and download free trial versions of all their software.
    To be honest, I have CS2 and it's capable of more than I'll ever need. I'm a hobbiest photographer so all I really do is general editing with the occasional fun manipulation, which Elements 7 will do. The CS programs are really more geared toward the graphic designers. Don't get me wrong it's a great program but I feel like maybe I'm wasting it's

  • I use Corel PSP X1. I love it. I also have CS2 but only use it to design some scrapbooking elements for my kits I sell/give away.

    everything in this gallery was done with PSP X1.

    I've heard and seen great things with Elements too.

    Be careful if you follow the anonymous tip above, it's ILLEGAL and those are traceable methods of downloading! Plus you are more likely to get viruses that way, my husband has used utorrent for stuff before and has had to wipe his computer 80% of the time after downloading.

  • .....did your husband make sure to read the comments..people do post whether it's fake or not, the pirating community is pretty good at pointing out fakes and viruses. Torrents are less traceable than p2p...still traceable...the only ones who really need to fear are the mass uploaders like the great "Axxo". casual downloaders are small fish, yeah some get caught and slapped with fines just to scare everyone else.

    {not to say that it's right or anything, ofcourse it's still illegal}

  • I'm another vote for Photoshop Elements... buy it and keep your actions legal. ;) It's only 100 dollars or so and it's GREAT.
    I also really like ACDSee.

  • I'm a huge fan of PaintShop Pro. I've been using it since version 4 and they're on 12. It retails for $99 but there's almost always a $20 rebate on their website.

    It has all or just about all of the functionality that the full version of Photoshop has and loads faster, uses less resources and has access to all the same filter options (if you use SuperBlade Pro, AlienFX or any other type of filter. It's got tons of canned effects that are pretty cool and very manipulatable (is that a word?).

    Here, check it out. Notice that the last tab includes a free trial. There are a couple of PaintShop Pro user groups here on Cafemom, too.
