Will long hair make me look older?

I want to avoid the "who does she think she is?", or "she looks like an old woman trying to be a teenager, why doesn't she act her age?" comments. Or, you know... ,when it just looks like she's trying way too hard and it's kinda sad!

  • As long as your hair is healthy I would not worry about it. I am 33 and my hair is about 5 inches past my shoulders.

  • y'know, my favorite commercial is of an older woman with long silver hair :) i thought, "now THAT'S how i wanna look when i'm older." I just can't stand it when women think that because they reach a certain age, that their hair has to be 2in short an curled into a hive. i just don't get it. BREAK THE MOLD, GIRL!! stand out and be beautiful :)

  • ok.. i think i just implied that you may be an old, gray haired woman lol sorry!!!! i was just saying that there shouldn't be an age to determine hair length. i've seen a lot of women on tv that have hair past their shoulders and they look amazing.

funny... i still feel like my foot is in my mouth lol

  • As long as your hair is healthy and well maintained, keep it as long as you want! I am 56 and have my hair about 2" past my shoulders. I highlight it and have a good cut. My 25 year old nephew told me he loves it and hates to see older women cut it off just because they think it's mandatory! I get positive comments on my hair all the time! I don't want to look "younger" I just want to look like me!

  • I'm 53 and I still have long hair. I love long hair. I think it depends on how you wear it, how you feel, and how it complements your face, etc. I have very think hair; when it gets humid, it frizzes and "grows" so I need the length in summer to weight it down. I also hot-iron it. During the winter, I keep it a little shorter to keep me warm. I wear it down then. During the summer, I wear it up or back more. If I had it short, I'd have an Afro! Remember the quote, "You're as young as you feel!" As long as you don't look like a "wannabe", I say keep it long! Rosie

  • IMO it is a personal choice. The funny thing is I had the opposite problem. My hair was extremely long for yrs. Dh always got weird when I talked about cutting it. The yr my youngest graduated I said "enough" I Didn't just cut a little I went radical change. I went from hair at my waist to hair at my jawline. Dh and youngest son freaked for a day or two. What a glorius feeling to wash your hair in 5 mins. towel dry in 2-3 and totally air dry in less than one. Liberating is what it was for me.

  • I agree with those who said it is more important that you have a good cut and healthy looking hair. I've seen too many women in their 50's + with long very stringy and unpolished hair...like they haven't cut it in 10+ years...that, I think, makes you look even OLDER! Also, if your hair is "salt and pepper" color, I would color it either all gray or your natural color at least until it all turns gray... then either go all gray or keep up the color...but keep it a natural shade/blend.
