How can I lose weight while breastfeeding?

I just had my first baby about 3 months ago. I def gained a little extra weight while prego!! NONE of my size 6 pants or small tops fit... guess thats what I get for the "Hey I'm pregnant now! I can eat whatever I want!!" attitude LOL.. But now I want to lose this chubby belly!! I would usually just skip meals or live on a couple bowls of cereal a day to lose weight.. However, I am breastfeeding and I am told by the doc to get extra calories in me because of it! So how the heck can I diet if I'm suppose to eat more?!!?! And eating fresh fruits and veggies would be great but I'd be the only one eating them at my house, meaning buying smaller amounts so they dont go bad, as well as a few more trips to the grocery store every 2 weeks -which is a nightmare to me, its a nightmare going once!
So, any of you lovely ladies have some advice?? Or am I asking to accomplish the impossible w/ my standards???

  • i lost most of my weight WHILE breastfeeding. Breastfeeding send most of the fat to the baby, and also shrinks your uterus.

  • I am actually smaller then pre pregnancy thanks to breast feeding! Although flabbier. Which isn't that great. lol!

    My only suggestion is to make every calorie count. I let myself have one treat a day (i.e. one can of soda, a cookie, piece of cake, etc). The key for me was to not buy sweets, soda, chips, or other junk foods. If I wanted a treat, I would buy 1 at a time. Sometimes it was such a hassle I would forget about it. Other than that it was fruits, vegtables, water, and healthy snacks. I also went on a really low sodium diet. No hamburger helper, caned soup, or other prepackaged/processed foods. It is a ton easier than trying to diet after breast feeding. And less stressful too!

  • You should lose weight by breastfeeding. Just eat lots of veggies and high calorie "good for you" foods. You'll burn off the extra calories. Also, you could start walking and doing stomach excersises.

  • it takes time chicka! those lbs will start to disappear soon . u burn 500+ callories a day just breast feeding n the way ur lil hungry hippo eats ur prolly burning more lol it another 3 months ull drop a size er two then prolly 3 m after that another n another . it really does take almost a year - to do it the healthy way - just worry about giving lil princess the best food possible which in turn will make you eat healthier = loosing wieght while breastfeeding . alot of docs n ppl say its the breastfeeding that gets moms to pre pregnancy size faster than anything else. it just doesnt happen overnight . lol unfortunately . youll get there . luv you guys!

  • There are lots of ways to do it.

    There is a LLL endorced book about losing weight while breastfeeding. It's posted in the group Breastfeeding Moms Trying To Lose Weight.

    You can also join the Weight Watchers Nursing Mom's program. Just remember that it took you 9 months to gain that weight so it will take time to lose it.

  • I did it five times. Breastfed all of mine and managed to lose the weight every time. With my first I did make the mistake of thinking I couldn't lose weight and breastfeed at the same time so I literally hung on to 25 extra pounds until I stopped breastfeeding. Then I smartened up and with the following 4 I just exercised regularly and ate 6 times a day but I had to watch what I ate. I ate high protein and stuck with good carbs and cut out the junk. You can still breastfeed and lose weight I never lost my milk in fact I always had an abundance of it and my kids were chunky too. You do have to eat fruits and vegetables and whole grains and lots of protein to keep your energy up and keep the cravings away too. Good Luck.

  • Thanks to breastfeeding I lost all my baby weight in about 8 months, and then another 20lbs on top just in the first 18 months of breastfeeding! Like PPs said, watch what you eat, and make the calories count. Doctors will tell you that you "need" an extra 500 calories a day, but that's not always accurate. If you have weight to lose, you don't have to consume all those extra calories.
    As for fresh produce... Frankly, I went to frozen. Either I buy extra fresh and freeze it myself, or I get it already frozen at the store. Walking also helps, and it's fun to get out with the stroller or baby carrier.
