How overweight to you have to be to get gastric bypass surgery?

I know several people who have had bypass done and most doctor"s require that you be "morbidly" obese before they consider you as a candidate. It is a life changing thing, both good and bad... I know a man and a woman who had it done and both are staying thin. They both lost about 180 pounds.
And the lapband. One of my best friends just had it done. She lost 22 pounds from the liquid diet required for 2 weeks before the surgery. She has only lost 18 pounds since, in over 4 months. She went into with the thought that if she wanted to diet, she wouldn't need surgery and that's the idea she has stayed with. She doesn't follow the required diet and thats a BIG no-no.
BUT. I guess just really do your research and find the best doctor available to help you prepare for something as drastic as surgery. And good luck.

i read you should be 100 lbs over weight...

I've known about 5 people personally who got weight loss surgeries. I believe you have to be about 100 lbs or more overweight. Good luck!

I've known a couple of people who've done it, and one who wanted to but can't afford it. Not all insurances will cover the procedure, and my friend in Seattle was told it would cost $13,000.
