What's it like to deliver the placenta?

What is delivering the afterbirth like?
I have heard it is more painful than the actual birth. I do not hear alot about it.
How long after the delivery of the baby does this take place?

  • It takes place directly after the actual birth, and it was not painful (at least to me - and I was not on painkillers either) It just felt really weird, lol. The doctor kinda tugged on the umbilical cord (after having cut it from the baby) to detach the placenta from wall of my uterus and then it was over. No biggie.

  • I didn't feel it.

it's like minutes after the baby's birth.

babies have bones...placenta is soft and squishy. it can't hurt worse :)

  • You deliver it like 5 minutes after the baby, and it wasn't a big deal at all! It was just a few extra contractions and it's kind of yucky.

  • With my first child it was about 3-5 minutes after she was born and it felt like a big bowel movement. With my second my dr. went in and got it without my knowledge. By the time I asked about it he said he was stitching me up already. I had epidurals with both.

  • it just feels kind of gross. sometimes its uncomfortable if they have to push on your stomach a bit but really its no where near as bad as the baby actually being born. by the time that part comes out you dont hardly realize it. its just really messy.

  • Don't worry! It's no biggie. It comes just after the baby does, but by that time, you're so relieved that the birth is over and so happy to see your baby that you barely notice it at all! Good luck!

  • It usually comes within a few minutes after birth. I didn't really find it painful.
