Are you planning to breastfeed until your child self weans?

I'd like to meet moms with a similar nursing mindset. I'm fairly new to CafeMom and am trying to meet friends. Feel free to add me as a friend, or simply share your thoughts on my question.

  • I never intended to bf my kids after 12 months but after I weaned my son at 3 months because I could no longer take his biting, it was like a snappig turtle with lock jaw! I missed it so much that I let my daughter go as long as she wanted to. By about 14 she was only interested in bf before bed. She eventually weaned herself by the time she was 18 months.
I am currently bf my 6 month old (literally!!!) and hope to continue as long as she likes. If she follows my other kids then I likely won't be bf her after 2 years. My kids seem to grow way to fast. My other two were talking very well by 2, they were taller than the average 2 yr old and just seemed to mature. I'm not sure I'm comfortable feeding a child that can unhook my bra and say, "Mommy may I have some milk now?"
How long do you intend to bf? Are there other reasons other than the bonding and health reasons?

  • Well that was my plan but my baby just self weaned at 13 months. I was really pushing for two years. But he absolutely refuses anymore :( he was never one of those babies that were really into nursing, KWIM? But we made it to 13 months and no formula! I am hoping my next kiddo will do it for longer! We have a couple moms in the group that are all for extended breastfeeding! I was shocked that so many were. So more then likely at one of the meet ups you will see another mama nursing, or talking about breast feeding.

  • I weaned my daughter at 16 months and I really wish I would have continued longer. She didn't fight the weaning much and it was mostly in the morning and at night when we were in bed.

  • My daughter 15months old. Sometimes I am so sick of nursing and other times I don't mind. I would like to get her to just morning and nights instead of snacking on me all day. lol. But I plan on letting her choose when she is ready. When I can't nurse her now I can tell she feels really rejected. She cries and says "Mom, Mom. No, no, no" in a really pathetic tone. It makes my heartache! I'll nurse as long as she needs me too.

  • I BF my first child till she was 2.5 (she's seven now) and the only reason I stopped was because I was pregnate with my second. I BF my second child for 18 months and only weaned him because #3 was on the way. Poor #3 was only breastfeed for nine months and I still feel guilty (he is now 2.5). But it is kinda funny when I think of how big my daughter was and still on my boob!! She still looked like a baby to me but she was very advanced and was talking and in preschool with older kids. Boy, did people stare and make comments. Some of my friends thought it was disgusting. But than again some of my friends were also BF toddlers.

  • Yes, I nursed my first son til he self weaned at 18 months. Still nursing 17 month old second one and will let him decide when he is done. He is much more attached than my first son (my fault due to lack of knowledge with the first). If he has a bad day, sometimes he nurses 7 times. On others he may only nurse first thing in the morning and before bed. Either way, I have no doubt he will nurse to the 2 year mark and beyond. I actually think it is natural to have mommy there, and for different children to self wean at different ages.

  • DD will be 2 on the 29th and she still nurses. Some of my friends and family don't like it and I could care less what they have to think or say about it. I'm doing what I feel is best for my baby girl. I'm planning on weaning around 3 if she doesnt do it on her own. I want to BF all my children till they are at least 2.5 yrs old. I see nothing wrong with it since the world average is like 6 or 7 yrs old. It is only taboo in America to BF longer than 12 months for the most part. According to animal studies humans should breastfeed untill their children are like 5 or something like that I forget the exact number. Humans BF their children the least out of all mammals. Sad huh? Why are people in such a hurry to stop nursing? your child isnt going to do it forever, why rush it? My friends son self weaned at 4.5. He just didnt want to do it anymore. Anyway, nice question.
