Can coffee help kids with ADHD?

I've heard a lot about how coffee can have the opposite effect on people with ADHD. Has anyone tried it with thier kids? How much and how often did you give it to them?

  • I haven't tried coffee, but my son has ADD and hates taking any meds. I have found that a can of Pepsi helps him to focus a lot!! ~~ He will even find himself craving a soda when he tries to concentrate on something. There must be some connection to it =)

  • I know coffee and/or soda helps me settle down and has since I was a pre-teen. I'm not sure how it would effect kids of a young age though.

  • The problem with giving them soda is that it's not good for them. They do seem to crave sugar but it just seems to rev them up even more. Mine are on meds, unfortunantly, but they couldn't go to school without them.

  • Just a thought, but if the caffiene is supposed to be good, which does make sense to me, why not try some tea. You can make your own iced tea and limit the sugar in it, so its not entirely bad for them.

  • Hi I'm the Big Kid Buzz blogger, Cafe Kierna, don't know if you saw this already but I actually just posted something about kids and coffee, and quite a few moms chimed in about coffee and ADHD. Check it out. http://www.cafemom.com/dailybuzz/big_kid/479/Kids_and_Coffee_A_Good_Combination

  • I DO !! Most of my family thought I was nutty.. but it worked for us.
The caffiene in coffee is natural... so it's not exactly the same as what's in soda pop.
And I found out from WIC that Tea is actually bad for kids because something in it depletes their iron.
My daughter drank a small cup (maybe 8oz) of coffee with French Vanilla creamer every morning since she was about 2.

  • Yes, I tried it on my son. He hated it because it made him jittery, not calm or more focused. Did not work in helping him with his ADHD at all.
