How many ultrasounds do you get during a typical pregnancy?

I have had two ultrasounds, and I still would like to know what I am having and wondering if I still will have a chance to find out?

  • It COMPLETELY depends on the mother's health issues, the pregnancy issues, and even the dr's philosophy. Some doctor's charge a universal fee for the pregnancy, and have an ultrasound machine in office, so they do one whenever they feel it's called for (or even if mom asks for it). Other dr.'s are more cautious and feel it's only necessary to do one to confirm the pregnancy and get a size of the baby, then do one at 20 weeks to see placental position, if all is good another one isn't done. Midwives tend to fall into the 2nd category. If you have diabetes of any kind, you may get an ultrasound every week, especially towards the end (that's just one condition that can increase ultrasounds). I suggest outright asking your doctor. Sometimes they don't keep track of who wanted to find out the sex, who has found out the sex, etc. Speak up =)

  • normally you will get one at the beginning to check on the pregnancy and to validate it, then around 20 weeks you get to find out the sex and you masy or may not get one at the end to make sure baby is in head down position that all depends on the doctor

  • I had one to confirm pregnancy at about five weeks, then again at twenty weeks to determine sex, then again at about thirty weeks to make sure all was well. Mine was a normal pregnancy and the Dr always does it this way. My SIL had a BUNCH of US to find out the sex of her baby. Her insurance only covered two unless there was a problem so she had to pay for all the extra ones, I think she had like six or eight extra ones.

  • I think usually 2 but since my AFP levels came back elevated I had one every 6 weeks up until I was 36 weeks then I had them twice a week to monitor the amniotic fluid along with non-stress tests twice a week. I got to see my baby a lot! And the tests ended up being false positive lol.

  • I was 10 weeks when I had my first ultrasound because I had passed a blood clot. Now at 18 weeks I am spotting so I went to the ER and recieved an ultrasound to make sure the baby was ok, which it was. But I would still like to know what it is, and the baby was crossing its legs when I was at the ER.

  • it all depends on your situation I had a total of 4 ultrasounds 1 diagnostic at 6 weeks one at 8 weeks to check progess one at 21 weeks to follow up and see gender and one at 25 weeks to see gender again since my little man was stubborn. If your insurance wont cover it you can pay out of pocket or sometimes the local tech schools or colleges do them for free to get the practice

  • I've had zero this time.
Last time I had one at about 6 weeks because I was having pain from an ovarian cyst and afraid that it was tubal pregnancy...but apparantly cysts are normal after you ovulate. They didn't seem alarmed about it at all.

  • I am 34.5 weeks and I have had 2 ultrasounds from my dr. One was at my 21st week, then at 28 weeks I got a 3d ultrasound done (at a specialist) then i had my last one at 33 weeks. They couldn't give me a definate on the sex which was another reason why I wanted the 3d - yes, its aboy! I have also not had any complications, my girlfriend gets them once a month because she is high risk with cervical issues. good luck!

  • Normally they only do one. Around 20 weeks to check how the baby is growing, and to see if there are any problems occuring. After that they only do them if its a emergency.
